Hi Heads

I am still alive and living off of signs, thanks to your help in the past! I would hate to think what would happen if I had to get a real job

I have critter problems on my property and this past weekend they came to a head!

I have minks, coons, over 4,000 birds, snakes, deer, the odd black bear and many a fish in the river I live on.

On Friday I live captured a skunk thats been digging up my lawn. When I awoke in the morning to discover my capture, I found a baby skunk no more than 8 inches in length.

It was so little and very cute....the old man next door wanted to drown it!. I was fearfull of disrupting it's family life ( mother + 2 babies )so I let it go. It walked between me and the neighbours to take the last piece of meat before it crawled down it's hole. The neighbourhood children all watched.

The next night "said cute skunk" sprayed two dinner guests and basically ruined a great get together, not to mention stunk up the area!

So the question is....do I listen to my neighbours and kill them one by one, or stop going out past midnight?

P.S. I lettered my truck as you all said and got two jobs the next day..simple as that!

Cheers
Mark

If you know where they're living, try spreading moth balls around the area. I was told this helps get rid of skunks and other assorted pesky critters. Supposedly they can't stand the smell (who can?)

If that don't work, I say it's open season on em. Just be careful how you get rid of them. Don't shoot them unless you're a very good aim and are certain you can hit them in the head (that way they don't spray). If you have a trap system, try that, just be careful you don't get sprayed.

Good luck

Come on know, you can easily rid yourself of them without having to outright murder them. Call your local animal warden, and they will set some live-capture traps are let em go somewhere far away. Skunks are scared off by noise, so try something to that effect. We had skunks by us, and had to cut down a nearby tree. After a day of that racket, they never came back. Try giving your city animal warden a call though, and see if they can help you out..

We try not to kill what we aren't going to eat, here. I would suggest getting a dog.

A border collie.

Your environment sounds beautiful and peaceful...awesome.

A gun is not the answer (Canada)

Local game warden laughed...I'm afraid to split them up if I remove them as they are so small.

Noise?....Jerry Garcia does not disturb them!

Moth balls?....I will try that.

My shop is next door to my house. I had gone to the house to do some things and had left one of the shop overhead doors open, planning on returning later. It was after dark when I remembered the door and went to lock up, only to discover a very large skunk prowling about the shop. I wasn't about to try to kick him out and I certainly wasn't going to lock him in the shop. Needless to say, the shop was left open that night. Good thing I live in a quiet, honest neighborhood, but then I guess the skunk would would do a better job than any night watchman.

Mark..Trust me on this Moth BALLS won't work!...They'll pick em up and toss em...use moth crystals!!!!! They stink better and they can't pick up each individual crystal. If you know where the burrow is just dump a bag of crystals down it. They, the skunks, will be gone overnight!!..Oh yeah...dump the crystals down during daytime while they are napping!

Since guns and the game warden are not an option a little gasoline down the burrow followed by a match will get em relocated.

Thanks for your replies,

In my quest to do this in a humane way, I will try Dave's idea about the moth crystals.

I also found their "backdoor" entrance and will crystalize both at the same time.

Did you know it's a criminal offence, punishable with jail time for killing theese things in Ontario, along with squirrels.

I just hope they go far away and don't come back!

Thanks
Mark

If you find the moth crystals difficult to obtain, head for the fragrance counter of your nearest Walmart. Get the cheapest kind of "perfume" that they sell "Eau du Walmart" or whatever. Dump some of this at the entrance to their burrow, and you will be rid of these critters post haste. ( Walmart perfume will even gag a skunk) but some younger girls have been known to marinade themselves in it, and leave a vapor trail in their wake.

Adreinne,
That was a GOOD one ROTFLMAO. But actually down here we make a great road kill jambalaya. Skunk is the main ingredient along with nutria, possum, gator, and loggerhead turtle. A cajun will eat anything that doesn't bite him first.
