Sad news - not bad news:

Bob Harper can't get anyone to drive him to Kansas City to catch his airplane flight to Chicago for the Milwaukee International meet. It's a four-hour drive and it's just a little too far for the people Bob has been relying on to drive him around lately. So I have cancelled his room and his airline flight (cost me $100.00 to do that - OUCH!!) and we will NOT be seeing his smiling face and headful of hair this weekend in Milwaukee.

For those who sent contributions, I will be returning your money to you. I would like some help on the cancellation charge but since I took it upon myself to make the arrangements I don't really expect any. If you feel generous, great - if not, please don't feel obligated.

So a good effort by all - but here is one example of what the elderly face every day. Physical limitations catch up to you eventually and your ability to travel around is limited mostly to local transporatation by kind souls. So if you know someone elderly, give them a hand some time - or a ride - or some good conversation. Someday you'll be in the same shoes. You get back what you give - and then some. Remember that.

Thanks to all for trying to make this work. We almost pulled it off - and regardless of the results, Bob considers himself "one of the luckiest guys alive - to be associated with such a fine group of people". And that's right from the "horses' mouth".

See you in Milwaukee.

That's too bad. You went the extra mile, Jay, and that counts for a lot, especially in the eyes of Bob.

As for me, cash my check, keep some for yourself for the cancelation charges and send the rest to Bob. He can use it to buy another barrel of shampoo.

Thanks for the effort.

Hey Jay, before you throw in the towel, and blow away a Ben Franklin, why not mention it to local radio, newspapers, or TV stations, in his area or even in Milwaukee, maybe something could be done. Look at the exposure you got from the BB, now imagine a whole city just finds out they have a Sign Legend living in their city. You just never know there might be someone out there that will say "I can help."
Just a suggestion for a dynamite signguy, whom I had the pleasure to meet in Boise.
oh yeah, what does Milwaukee say about this?? Cisco

Too bad things aren't working out Jay. Keep my bucks and lets make a fund for the next trip.

What about the Duck Soup meet?

I met Bob Harper. What a great person and legend in the sign biz! It seems that something could be done to get him there. Where is the missing link, here?
I can't make it to Milwaukee because of surgery (female ) but, to know Bob could make it if he wants, that would be super. And there is always Duck Soup, too.
Baby Doll banner has arrived at my house and all because of a great concerted effort of many folks. You made it happen, yes, YOU.

Update from my travel agent:

I get charged FULL price for the ticket because it was non-refundable from American. (full-fare, non-refundable would have been upwards of $700.00)

It will cost another $100 to change the ticket if Bob ever can use it (it's in his name - just paid for by my credit card) but he can still use it anytime from now until he doesn't want to fly anymore - presuming he can get a ride to KC.

So now what? A part of me wishes we could have done this sooner because it was the 7 day booking restriction that forced me to make a decision and go ahead with it. But for the thanks I received from Bob - and many of you - I guess it really was worth it. Thanks again for helping out. We'll get him somewhere (someday) with the ticket I guess!!

Jay,

I sent a check for $25 that you will probably get today. Keep it and let's see what happens. Maybe there is still a way with AmTrack or a bus to KC. Ya never know.

All the time and effort you have put into this has not gone unnoticed. Hopefully it will all come together.

Just a thought; Get word out to the local trucking agencies or a near by truck stop and I'm sure once they know the situation, they'd be more than happy to help! The radio stations a great idea as well. What about any local busnesses that may be willing to help?
