Do Vinyl letters (5 yr plus) stick to semi gloss Latex paints (100% acrylic)
I have read the Signcraft Articles about switching to Latex. But it seems every issue has another comment by someone about the letters not sticking. They don't mention whether they are using flat or semi gloss. I have a few projects out there and so far they are holding up well. But its only been 5 months so its to early to tell.
Vinyl does not stick well to flat latex, and not a whole lot better to semi-gloss. You need a slick gloss surface for the vinyl adhesive to properly adhere.
The second problem is that flat or semi-gloss latex does not weather well if its used for exterior applications. There are some pretty good gloss latex enamels on the market, and they are getting better all the time. The biggest drawback so far, is that most of them are not very opaque and require several coats. Also some of the colors are not as bright and vivid as oil based enamels.

Thanks for responding. I was wondering if it would help to coat the board (mdo) with a high gloss paint like Deka or Ronan before applying the letters. I have been trying to find a source for them around here.

I think I might have come upon a first. Don't know if I've ever openly dissagreed with Jerry M here before. Most all high end vinyl/latex/acrylic house paints are flat.
I've read many of those comments about sticky-back not holding well to flat surfaces. I have signs surprisingly holding up well after fifteen years that were done that way.
Once you're told that it doesn't work, you're accountable for that information. Prior to that, God gives a measure of grace to the ignorant. You might have been better off not asking.
This home spun theology is purely from my observation and experiences, and not found in the bible.

I have a ext. mdo sign I finished with Sherwin Williams high gloss "super paint" and applied HP vinyl over about a year ago.
It still looks good from the road....guess it wouldnt hurt to get a close up view.
Speaking of a close up view am I the only one that goes up to signs and "rubs em" to see if they are vinyl or edge print, etc. When I do that I cant help but wonder what people think? hehehehe....thats one reason why I answered Monte's post "fanatic" as one word for Letterhead. And glad to see the mayor almost agreeing with me on one of his posts.
Hope this helps (that isnt patented is it Pat?) heheheh

I have had mixed results with vinyl adhesion to latex paint. My worst experience was with Benjamin Moore semi gloss. Letters would not stick. However, since then I have had good results with Coronado, Sherwin Williams and Duron. I made a sign in Nov. of 1998 with an acrylic latex gloss bright blue background. It's holding up great. It hasn't faded or oxidized like alkyd. The only advantage alkyd has for us is that it rolls on smoother in the summertime. Latex can be tricky to get a smooth finish when the shop is in the 90's.
