There is a painting (just for fun) I want to start on soon, and I want to incorporate a bit of neon into it. I know nothing about neon, so any help is appreciated. I am going to build a sort of 'box' instead of using a canvas, and want to hide the transformer / wiring inside of it. How much clearance do I need to leave (how thick are the transformers, and do I need to take heat into consideration?) and also if anyone does neon and is interested in doing this for me, how much it would cost. Nothing complicated, for the one idea I have, it would just be an oval, probably 8 inches by 4 inches or so, and for another, a neon cross maybe a foot high or so. Not sure on the color neon yet... I had heard about 'crackle' neon before, I think with broken glass or insulation inside the tubing or something.. can anyone elaborate on that? Thanks in advance for the help!!

Tyler, There is a fair bit to know regarding neon, but it isnt rocket science so dont be put off by the naysayers. Transformers come in different sizes and ratings, find a neon manufacturer in your city and they will be able to help you out with the one suitable for your application. You will (probably) need to provide them with a layout to make the units to, for this you'll need to consider where you want the electrode returns to be placed (the start and finish of the glass unit) as well as the supports for the unit. Make CERTAIN you insulate correctly and that it is inaccessible to curious fingers. If there are any specific questions you think I might be able to answer drop me a line. David
