I was extra busy and ask the council painter to help me paint some blanks up which he did but he forgot to remove the plastic coating of the sheets so now I have nice black blanks that the colour peels of very nicely and which we now have to redo I think I will take him to get glasses

i cut the letters and told the help that they went on the 4x8 and went on my way. next day i am about to load 5the sign and the help had put the letters on the clear mask on the alumalite. it did come of easy though.

About 3 years ago, we lettered 30 aluminum signs.....didn't see the clear mask on the blanks. Its almost impossible to discern.
Ruined over 15 signs because of the clear plastic protective sheeting. The others were spared because we lettered the back side by mistake.
I was so mad I called the supplier and asked why they would sell aluminum blanks with no indication there was a plastic film over the blanks with not stamp or mark or something to warn the user.
Next I called the manufacturer and let them have it! I asked them why they couldn't put a blue plastic on the aluminum or have little dots pre printed on the film or ANYTHING.
Well my anger was vented and nothing changed. Stupidity still ranks among some manufacturers and suppliers.
Hope this helps ease the pain a little.... I can laugh at it now.

Friend of mine did this with a aluminum race car body. They painted the thing, then brought it to me to get it lettered. I noticed it right off, man they were pissed!

I noticed on the latest batch of blanks I picked up at PSS that they had a clearly visable light blue film on one side... as I started to paint one of those panels last week I also noticed that on the opposite side there was a thin clear sheet of plastic covering it. I had always painted on the blue side... after I had peeled it off.
I had wondered if anyone had ever painted on that very thin clear plastic side. I almost missed it and nearly painted on it myself.
Dave, I'd say I feel for you, but I did that last week when I discovered this second side of clear.
So this week, after all my own versions of excitement with the kids, soccer parents, people I'm related to by no choice of my own, and the day job... I just laugh at it all. It's these little annoying things that keep life interesting. To quote Cam here: "... a testament to the theory that life is long stretches of interminable boredom punctuated by moments of intense excitement."

An ex-boss of mine did the same thing but, hows about this.
Heard a story of a kid that worked at a shop just before me that screwed a 12' X 32' billboard(8 sheets of MDO) to the work wall to fabricate. Days later, when he was finishing, he went to each screw and covered it up with a 3/8" circle of white vinyl(it's what we did on the job site as an alternative to painting white enamel on the screw)...the sign was still screwed to our work wall!

Hey Ian, I know a bloke in Brisbane who told me a story years ago like yours. His apprentice was screen printing the 4th colour on 100 colorbond panels when they finally twigged that the plastic was still on them. I must admit though, that sometimes it is really hard to see especially after the sheet has been guillotined. We used to have a guy where I work that wasn't really too interested in anything he ever did at the shop. One day he applied all the reverse cut translucent vinyl to an acrylic face that still had a clear protective sheet on it! This was multiple colours, too, with a coloured background. - maybe a 2'x16' face. I still can't believe he missed that there was a plastic sheet on it, because it's pretty loose on the face and ragged on the edges, unlike the clear film on the sign blanks most of you are talking about. It's also not that clear. It's apparent that he didn't bother cleaning the face before he started, or he couldn't possibly have missed it.
I don't know how he managed to remove the premask each time without pulling the whole thing up either - he must have been really determined for once. It was only noticed after the face was flipped over, showing some pretty strange "bubbles" everywhere.
It was however, the fastest and easiest that I've ever seen a face stripped. Maybe two seconds.

Heck fire man, I just did that last week. Had two 12"by18" 080 aluminum signs to coat out both sides. Next morning one side was great, the other, little bubbles popping up on it. Hmmmmmmm..... Yep, plastic was on them suckers too. Came off so daggone pretty. Hee hee, at least I was able to laugh about it. Told my wife and she laughed much harder.
