OK, I know most of you suggest oven cleaner to remove hand lettering from vehicles, but what about boats? Dies it make a mess of the gel-coat? Is there something else more suitable like regular paint stripper? I have never removed paint before, I am a big chicken and dont want the resposibility to mess up a finish, so I send the vehicles to an autobody shop to get it done by the pros. The boat I am going to apply vinyl lettering to needs to be stripped first, so I thought I'd ask here so I may give the customer the right advice to get it off for me.

water based paint stripper should work on "Gel Coat" but not on painted surfaces.
I've used it a long time ago but cannot remember the products name.

Tim, Easy job...sand the entire transom with 320 waterproof paper...wet it with soapy water(a few drops of detergent to 1 qt water) Next sand with 400 then 600 then ultrafine..(1000 -1400 grit) then buff with compound.. concentrate your sanding on the painted portions ...use your fingertips....circular motions all over the painted area The entire transom will be brightened.... Next step.... Roger's Rapid Prep.....this product cannot be praised enought..IT WORKS! then stickie away!

for the removal of lettering on gelcoat, use a product from interlux. it is gelcoat paint remover r some other equally boring yet descriptive name.
use it in small areas. use it in the shade. wear gloves. works great. use it all the time.
but you know.... we don't remove lettering anymore. too many people beefing about... "i can still see the old lettering". i let the marina do it now.
have a great one!
