Why do computers 'beep' at you? This one here had occasionally... but lately it can be as often as every few minutes. Each time it 'beeps', I also notice that the indicator lights above the numbers (num, caps, scroll) come on.
Any ideas? Is it telling me it's about to self destruct? Oh boy... won't Bruce be excited about THAT... hehehe!!

It's a Microsoft thing for newly married folks. It happens with a name change and goes away after a couple years. It's their way of saying "congratulations."

There are no stupid computer questions, just stupid computers. You may have some kind of monitoring device running. Most newer motherboards support cpu temp, fan speeds, votages, etc. But if there was an error the beeps are continuous. I suspect you have a utility that monitors your system at given intervals.

the beep or beeps are a code....when you get a single beep...the bios is checking its connection with m/b and cpu....if you get a beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep...its a no conection....if you get a series of em(not counting in COMPAQS)then some preconnection is not being made....this is mostly a techie thing.....when you take you car to the garage...the newer ones also do this same thing when hooked up to a diagnostic machine. its the cars computer control talkin to mechanic....

If you have software running in the background, like mIRC chat software... it has a feature which can turn beeping on or off. The beeping can be when people join or leave a channel, when your own nickname is mentioned in a channel, or any time anything is typed into a channel window by you or the others in the channel.
If it's mIRC that's doing the beeping, you can uncheck it in FILE, OPTIONS, SOUNDS and uncheck the "enable event beeps section" and uncheck any of the boxes below that which read "Beep on..."
As a last resort, you could always open up your computer and cut the wires running to the little speaker :-)

the beeps are bios codes, and each motherboard manufacturer has different codes. Think of it as morse code for geeks! Usually the codes arent listed in the paperwork that comes with your PC, but can be had from technical support. Generally, the bios is preset at the factory and is never messed with. If you've got unusual beeps, they are signals of failing hardware or other issues. Consult your dealer or manufacturer soon.
The funniest one I've ever had to deal with is the one where your computer will start playing Beethoven thru your case speaker. This one was a pain to trackdown.. what was it? It was a failed case fan! The music is a signal for overheating.
