I'm not having much luck with the search but I know this has been discussed. No clear on the gold right ? I think they want this hand done. If I do it I plan on cutting a vinyl mask, rolling on the size, leafing, peeling the mask and then hand outlining/shading it. Sound like the right plan ?

Not without more details!!!! What is the leaf going on? Fiberglass? Wood? Metal?? Where is it going? Near the waterline? on the deck? on the transom? in a prtected area?
When you roll the size over the mask, be sure that it is not a heavy coat...this is one area where a thick coat will ruin the job! Peel the mask BEFORE you lay the leaf!! clear coating will depend on the above questions!

I think the old post you are thinking about was refering to clearing over "signgold" vinyl. I think the gold should be cleared, helps bring out the brilliance of the finish.

What type of clear can be used over gold leaf? I once did some intricate gold leaf on a pool cue, then cleared it with automotive ureathane. A few places looked like the gold and size melted, it didnt wrinkle. I used a fast dry size and cleared a few days later. I probably just put the clear on a little too heavy in that area (didnt run it though). Suppose I could add a little ureathane hardner to the size? like adding hardner to 1 shot?

here's a trick: cut your mask with a outline maybe 1/8" leave it in place apply the mask, roll the size, right away peel the outline, apply the leaf carefully as to not waste much on the size left on the mask, burnish, clear then peel the mask. You will have a nice clean job with a 1/8" clearcoat outline and will last forever! ( if you want to paint an outline do it after the clear dries while the mask is still on, it will be perfect)

Gold on a boat needs a clearcoat. There will be somebody swimming off the transom..they climb aboard...scuff the gold. Fishin off the transom can sometimes beat the guy on the bow.Fish bang the transom. Not always tho...here's a tip for the fishermen....fish open deep water...drop a light anchor with a steep line. The object is to drift and let the anchor scuff the bottom....it will stir up food fer fishies...fish a bait near the anchor...voila.. Hey..back to gold.. I do quite a few restoration projects with a local boat shop. They restore small antique wood runabouts 40's and 50's..gold was the norm for that era...the boatshop has perfected using new 2 part urethanes. He will prepare the transom for me...scuffed with 400 grit paper.I do the gold with slow size..he waits a few days...lays a clear over top....he dusts a dry coat on...lets it kick...then shoots another wet coat on....its a beautiful gold job...buried in a clearcoat that lasts for years... I would not use real gold on a gelcoat hull..get some Sign Gold and seal the edges..This product looks mighty nice!!! I dont wanna stir the pot..BUT...why would you want to use a stencil???...When you are going to do "a real gold job"Here goes a chance for you to re-kindle the flair!!! If you can outline it...you can letter it...With a brush...!!!! Im callin the sign police....!

Rick, Adding urethane hardener to gold size will probably fail. GOld size, the fast ones, are short oils and adding urethane makes them gel almost immediately. You need need oil to go with urethane.
