40 years next year--homebased, just me, 40 hours over 7 days, 99 Ranger 4wd, specialize in trucks, boats, flat panel signs, or Super Stock molded panels, favorite:trucks, least favorite, "keep off the grass" type stuff, first thing get up, most used computer, least used radial arm saw, dress blue jeans t-shirt, habits coffee, meets half a dozen, inspiration Signcraft, weak area hard call, strong area, no ads, loyal customer base, word of mouth, no sign in front of the place since '67. Customers returning, who knows? Goals just day to day, no real life outside the shop, personal hobbies, combat flight sims on the 'puter. Summary on chosen profession--signwork is actually my second profession- my main souce of making a living for more years than I care to remember was as an RN in the emergency dept. of the local hospital, which happened to be a level 2 trauma center, and also a teaching institution in that it had interns, residents, and a senior staff. My shift was 11-7 for years, and there were many moments of sheer terror, followed by hours of boredom. Finally burned out in '84 mostly due to short staffing and the budget considerations regarding staffing. Still, I wouldn't trade the experience for anything.

A strong area you're proud of: finding solutions peoples call me all the time when they get stuck and most of the time we find a way to make it happend. sorta troubleshooter.
What keeps your customers returning back to you? quality work and respect of schedules if an event/shooting last only a few hours...better get the signage there on time!
What goal for your biz are you currently working on? humm...thinking about 50" digital printer but there are a lot of those machine around just waiting for files to print. I would just like to do it inhouse.
Do you have a 'life' outside of work? yep! used to live to work, now, I work to live. it's awesome
Your personal hobbies: family, friends, motorbiking, books, foil fencing, listening to music, going to shows, work around the house, having a good time, internet, playing in the puter...
What kind of music do you listen to? verry eclectic(sp?). Mostly rock, folks, jazz, blues, world beat(musique du monde), classic, opera...depends on the mood. have trouble with house techno and rap though...i think it's too repetitive for me...or am I getting old?
If you could have anything you wanted for your shop, money no object, what would you choose? wow all those toys i could get! and I have to chose one?! :-) I would try the machine that prints with any kind of paint or inks on any media. I think it pixation or something similar...I like this idea.
In summary, how you feel in general about your chosen profession: Can't picture myself elsewhere...unless i win the jackpot at the lottery...maybe... started out to be a graphic designer and got hooked by the brush. It's a chance that from time to time I get to hand paint a few signs. I think that things are way to fast nowaday.
How long have you been in business? On my own since 1992. Sign guy for 23 years
Storefront/homebased/other? Home based for 7 years, shop for last 2
How many people work at your shop? Myself and 1 full timer
How many hours do you work in a week? Typically 50, spring about 60/wk
What kind of shop vehicle/s do you drive? '96 Chev Pick-Up, '93 Chev Cargo van
What work do you specialize in? Vehicle lettering, 4x8's, Edge graphics
What's your fav kind of project to work on? Edge window stickers(racers), racecars
What kind of work do you enjoy the least? Ones in which customer thinks he has good ideas but there not!
When you first get to your shop, what do you do before you get right down to work? Turn on plotters, computers, lights, check e-mail, check caller ID, then give 'er.
What's your most used item/tool? Computer and FlexiSIGN Pro
Least used item/tool? Paycheck to self
What's your dress code? Strictly casual. Folks know me by blue jeans and t-shirts (either a Gaber Signs t-shirt or a stock car racing shirt)
What habits do you ritually do while working? Laugh alot with my employee, make the best of the always challenging hi-tech problems that occur daily with software, puters, plotters, etc.
How many meets have you attended? 2 small Minn letterhead meets, the big one in Mazeppa, and my first one back in '84 in Plymouth, WI where I met some of the best ever... Bob Behounek, Pat Finley, Vince Ballistreri
What provides your best inspiration for fresh work? Listening to music I enjoy, input from my employee, seeing other ugly work and knowing I can do better than that!
A weak area you'd like to strengthen: More brush work. Used to do it alot, but I'm getting rusty. Also saying NO. I'm a yes man, and pay the price by working to reach all of the unrealistic deadlines I've set.
A strong area you're proud of: Customer Service. I stand behind my work and always make it right if there is a problem, usually at no cost.
What keeps your customers returning back to you? I think the above statement covers it.
What goal for your biz are you currently working on? Charge more, try to do higher end work and less of the "pain" jobs.
Do you have a 'life' outside of work? Absolutely. Work consumes alot of me, but I LOVE hunting , I enjoy indoor and outdoor power volleyball, love going to stock car races. Wait a minute, did I say absolutely? Now that I sit and think, that's all I do... Work, races and volleyball. Uh-oh.
Your personal hobbies: Hunt, volleyball, shootin' buckets with my kids, listening to good rock and roll, keeping my vehicles neat and clean.
What kind of music do you listen to? mostly 80's rock along with some 70's, some 90's also. Went to U2 concert in St. Paul, MN this May and it was AWESOME! Police, Cars, Gary Numan, VanHalen, Tears For Fears, Depeche Mode, Billy Idol, Pink Floyd. By the way, I'm not a druggie, just an occasional beer man.
If you could have anything you wanted for your shop, money no object, what would you choose? An Edge II, A hydraulic lift for race car lettering, taller doors. (10 foot is my tallest door)
In summary, how you feel in general about your chosen profession: There are days I'm happy I'm my own boss, but I've found that overhead stinks, taxes and insurance are around the corner too often, and it's nobody's fault except my own that I don't make more money, but at day's end, I've worked my butt off, and I've screwed nobody, and I have the respect of alot of people and customers. When I think about what other people do for a living, alot don't have much to actually physically show what they've done with their hands and mind. Kind of hard to measure what you've done if you've scooped ice cream cones all day long, flipped burgers, or crunched numbers, but when I'm done with work everyday, I've created something very useful to a whole bunch of people, and it is something that alot of people take pride in, take pictures of, and USE for a long time. I can stamp out my own history every day and leave alot of things created by for thousands of people to see for a long time!

Storefront/homebased/other? Both. I have a storefront in a commercial location and live in the house next door (2 addresses.)
How many people work at your shop? Two, myself and an installer.
How many hours do you work in a week? I average about 30.
What kind of shop vehicle/s do you drive? The shop vehicle is a 1993 Ford E150 van, and I also use my 2000 Explorer.
What work do you specialize in? Whatever somebody wants.
What's your fav kind of project to work on? Anything custom & unusual - something that takes real creativity to even figure out where to begin.
What kind of work do you enjoy the least? Repetitive monotonous work, like golf tournament sponsorship signs.
When you first get to your shop, what do you do before you get right down to work? Sift through notes on my desk to see what needs attacked first, start the plotter and check emails and a few message boards.
What's your most used item/tool? The computer.
Least used item/tool? Opaque projector. I think I used it last about six years ago.
What's your dress code? Typically I wear jeans and a casual shirt. But sometimes t-shirt, shorts & sandals.

A weak area you'd like to strengthen: I am a lousy businessman, but I have no desire to learn the bs of a "good" one.

Do you have a 'life' outside of work? Yes! I used to work 70-100 hours/week. Now I seldom do more than 30. I have a wife, two small children and friends that mean a lot to me. Work is a necessary evil that I suffer no addiction to.
Your personal hobbies: I play music, sports, have lots of church related functions and like frequenting several special interest message boards.
What kind of music do you listen to? Rock.
If you could have anything you wanted for your shop, money no object, what would you choose? Wouldn't mind having a large format digital printer & laminator.
In summary, how you feel in general about your chosen profession: I probably should have found a better part of the country to do this type of work, but I am fortunate to do as well as I do here.

How long have you been in business? approx 10 yrs
Storefront/homebased/other? newly homebased again since April 2001, I've had 3 storefront locations.
How many people work at your shop? down to just me now - I've had one employee for most of my time in biz
How many hours do you work in a week? 4 full days a week, 9-6, 36 hrs, and occasionally will work a 5th if extremely busy.
What kind of shop vehicle/s do you drive? white Ford F-150 1993, lowered (perfect height for me LOL), mags, tonneau cover (excellent but could use an extended cab version)
What work do you specialize in? lettering and striping firetrucks these days, last year it was lettering heavy trucks, the year before that it was bodyshop repair work.
What's your fav kind of project to work on? complete packages - logo development, stationery, signs, vehicle lettering
What kind of work do you enjoy the least? removing vinyl graphics and doing stuff for myself
When you first get to your shop, what do you do before you get right down to work? start the coffee brewing, feed the horse, check email, sip coffee and have a light breakfast while I snoop on the bb
What's your most used item/tool? computer/plotter
Least used item/tool? paper cutter, got it to cut specialty diamond grade vinyl for stripe installs, but then the industry standards changed and didn't need the material any longer... oh well.
What's your dress code? overalls because of all the cool pockets and no waist to worry about , or jeans/t-shirts
What habits do you ritually do while working? drink coffee, snack on fruit all day, have to watch Young and the Restless, and take every Wednesday off to spend with Cody
How many meets have you attended? 1 so far, Banff, then our son came into our lives = will wait till he's abit older before starting again
What provides your best inspiration for fresh work? lots of rest (naps energize me big time), books, hand sketching what I want while looking at the real thing (mountains for example)
A weak area you'd like to strengthen: doing my own signs and vehicle graphics I could be proud of, I always run out of time
A strong area you're proud of: When I complete a job, I can look at it and say, "damn, I'm good!" LOL. High quality control freak. If it isn't right, it gets redone. I'm also cursed with an eye for straight. I can see crooked a mile away.
What keeps your customers returning back to you? honesty, knowledge about what I'm doing, taking an interest in their projects
What goal for your biz are you currently working on? attempting to fine tune my new shop location; still need new signs, samples... it's just that when I do have the time, I'd rather be spending that time with my son. No comparison. I guess that means I don't like working for me?
Do you have a 'life' outside of work? Most definately! I feel more alive and inspired at work if I take the time to enjoy my family and other interests around me. We moved to the country for a reason.
Your personal hobbies: enjoying my 2 yr old's company, horseback riding, interior decorating, gardening, accomplishing something at home (yes, this is a BIG deal when you have a toddler in tow)
What kind of music do you listen to? I'm not fussy, whatever comes in clear on the radio. I generally tune it out, just like some background noise. Somedays I have the radio off and I don't even realize that either. I love the quiet so I can really concentrate. After having a shop connected to a noisy bodyshop, I adore the 'hurts your ears it's so quiet' quiet. I like hearing the birds chirp, the sheep next door, the odd chicken cackling, and the horse galloping through the fields.
If you could have anything you wanted for your shop, money no object, what would you choose? digital printer and someone to run the thing, and a flashy expensive website made for me
In summary, how you feel in general about your chosen profession: I love being soley in charge of my time. I also love the creativity that comes with doing what we do. It's really gratifying seeing your work drive by for all to view. I feel very fortunate to have a creative outlet and to be working so near my family. WHEN I win the lottery, I'll be home fulltime with my son, so for now, I guess my customers can still use me while I'm currently available...

Dad's been in the actual sign business for 25 years.
It's a store, but no walk-in business. Just wholesale to architects, general contractors and like that.
There are 4 of us there. All family.
We work 40 hours a week, but Dad's there longer.
Our shop vehicle is a Suburban Silverado 4WD with a scaffold trailer behind it.
My specialty is layouts and painting.
My favorite is working on the big carvings.
My least favorite is the Vinyl film stuff, but I have to do it anyway.
When I first get in I put on my makeup and make a cup of tea.
Most used items are the computer and paint brushes/chisels.
Least used are the scaffolds. I hate them, but I have to go up anyway.
I wear pants, skirts, dresses, shorts, whatever the day requires. I know the night before, but I keep stuff at the studio.
I clean up as I work, that's my ritual.
No meets attended.
My Dad's carvings keep me inspired.
I'd like to strengthen my public relations. I don't react well when guys come in and hit on me.
Our customers come back because we do good work, have good prices and ALWAYS keep our word.
My life outside of work is my boyfriend and the band. (I play bass guitar in my brother's band)
My personal hobbies are the bass guitar and reloading for my Swiss rifles. I'm also a good skeet shot.
I listen to, and play mostly classic rock from the 70's and 80's.
For the shop I'd like to have a 60" digital printer, but not until they have a true 5 to 7 year setup. Our router is ok, but I'd like one of the really big multi-head new ones.
I like what I do. There's always something new in our studio. I hate the same old vinyl junk, but when I get to paint logos and work on the carvings I'm happy.
That's me!
:^)
Oops! I just got tapped on the head cuz I said "vinyl junk". Sorry. We do a lot of it too, it's just not my favorite. Sorry.

OK, I think I've got a few minutes now that its friday night. 18 years. I work at home since I bought a house that is zoned for business in '95. Just me and Jim, my 20 hr a week helper. I work 35-40 hrs a week. I've been driving my Ford Expedition (not too practical) til I get another Astro Cargo van. Wore out the old one. Mixed bag of work, whatever comes along that looks interesting. Sometimes office building directories, sometimes banners, carved hdu, sandblasted signs, logo design... right now I'm enjoying designing a stone and brick retaining wall for my yard. Before I get to work, after quiet time, breakfast, coffee, run on the beach, I check the stock market, look over my plans for the day, think awhile. What I enjoy least is a customer who wants complete creative control but has no skill. Most used tool, probably the vinyl cutter, Edge, next the table saw. Least used tool, the electropounce. In the summer, shorts cotton shirt, sandals, I put on some slacks and nice shirt to meet new customers. Ritually take a lot of breaks. No meets since Ed Roth's Parties in the 80's. I can't take paint fumes anymore, my helper does pretty much all the painting. Inspiration lately comes from architecture, old art deco buildings, I love that stuff. I'd like to learn more about managing a business on a larger scale. Strong area, I follow through on my word and enjoy meeting and talking to new customers. I used to be scared by that. Outside of work besides hanging out at the beach, kayaking, friends, coffee, I love to travel, going to France in Sept. Blues, old country music. Any tool? I guess an electronic router. I feel I'm pretty close to what I should be doing, although with allergies, nowadays theres so many paints, adhesives, etc. I have to stay away from its hard sometimes to be in this business, but I just focus on what I can do and I make a pretty good living and really enjoy the freedom of being self employed and having the respect of my peers, customers and friends.

But I figure God gave me what limited ability I have for a reason, and so I stay. Thanks! This was fun! Love- JILL

How long have you been in business? Painted my first sign in 1974 when I was 14 years old and have had a hand in the business or a related field ever since. It's been 5 years full time after an 11 year stint in the creative dept of a daily newspaper.
Storefront/homebased/other? Home-based.... wouldn't want it any other way because my work and personal life interweave.
How many people work at your shop? Just me with occasional help from my now 16 year old son.
How many hours do you work in a week? As many as I have to. (or don't have to!)
What kind of shop vehicle/s do you drive? A minivan and a customized nearly antique 1966 Dodge School Bus that serves as a mobile shop and RV, both signed to the hilt! Both get me plenty of attention.
What work do you specialize in? I love the fact that every job is different.
What's your fav kind of project to work on? Dimensional layered signs have been my fav lately.
What kind of work do you enjoy the least? Accounting/administration
When you first get to your shop, what do you do before you get right down to work? I wake up and drag myself to the living room which has become my office/design studio and turn on this 'puter and check emails. Then I shower, have breakfast and decide what needs immediate attention and just do it!
What's your most used item/tool? I guess it would have to be this 'puter with all the time I spend designing projects and presentations as well as this BB.
Least used item/tool? Accounting program(LOL)
What's your dress code? Whatever is appropriate for the work of the day. Fresh black Wrangler jeans and company logo embroidered golf shirts for marketing calls and other public errands. My crappiest clothes for dirty work in the shop. And with the hot weather lately shorts and a muscle shirt for clean projects or design.
What habits do you ritually do while working? No real rituals I can think of. I suppose this BB is my closing ritual every night before I hit the sack.
How many meets have you attended? A Brush with Nature at Banff and the legendary Mazeppa Muster.
What provides your best inspiration for fresh work? Sign mags, especially SignCraft.
A weak area you'd like to strengthen: Accounting and administration.
A strong area you're proud of: Originality and design
What keeps your customers returning back to you? Can-do attitude and personal service!
What goal for your biz are you currently working on? Work less and make more money!
Do you have a 'life' outside of work? Not really.... unless you count my son's baseball games. Still working on filling a void in my personal life.
Your personal hobbies: My cars and guitars have kind of languished these last few years as I've focussed on developing my business.
What kind of music do you listen to? I'll listen to most music but Country & Western is my fav.
If you could have anything you wanted for your shop, money no object, what would you choose? A nice roomy shop beside a nice house on an acreage near a lake.
In summary, how you feel in general about your chosen profession: I cannot imagine ever doing anything else!
Happy Signing.....Marty

I have 17 years total experience in this profession, 11 years of that in my own business.
I have a Home Studio & Detached Shop.
It's just me and subcontractors.
I work whatever time it takes. Averages about 40 hours per week.
I drive an Isuzu Trooper
I specialize in exceeding expectations, the customers and my own, with terrific end results. Creating a great look, in whatever format & substrates best suit the needs.
What I like doing best is Logo & image design, the total package – Projects that start from logo conception, and follow thru to biz cards, letterheads, and signage.
I dislike Installs & Interuptions. Anything that takes me away from what I’m immersed in at any given time. I tend to get in grooves with projects, and it’s annoying to have to go from one thing to another, especially when they are different in nature. All could be great projects, but not when you can’t fully focus on any one. I dislike getting pulled in many directions, but it's difficult to avoid.
Before I get down to work, I feed the cat, let the dogs out, brew an espresso, check my email, visit the BB, line out my day, and if needed, order materials and make phone calls.
My most used tools are my computer coupled with my imagination.
Least used .... ummm … I think I have a grommet set lying around here gathering dust.
What's your dress code? Tank top, shorts, sneakers. (warmer clothes during the winter month or two) "Dirty" version in shop, “clean” version in studio or on appointments.
Regular daily behavior patterns for me include; stopping to regroup, shuffle thru work orders & notes, let the dogs out, check email, let the dogs in, make a phone call, let the dogs out, answer a phone call, let the dogs in, stop to regroup, get a drink of water, let the dogs out, check email, answer the phone, let the dogs in . . .
I've attended Eight or Nine Letterhead meets in the past 3 years.
The world around me inspires me. Some days are better than others.
I'd like to improve upon my Scheduling – as in fitting everything into a workday and learning to do things using time and tools more efficiently. Also I'd like to override my timidness in learning Corel, Photoshop & various webdesign software.
I'm proud of my Creativity in ideas, Design, and my Repore with people.
I feel my customers return because of my enthuisiasm for their work and my desire to excell.
The goals I have set are to streamline my shop. I'm also partnering with Dave to do Web Design. I'm currently doing more work for myself … including my website, sample signs, new biz cards etc.
Life beyond work? Absolutely! Never a dull moment!
My personal interests include, Music, Dancing, Exercise, Cooking, Movies, Boating, Bargain Shopping, Travelling, Biking, Socializing w/ Friends, spending time with my terrific boyfriend, Dave.
With regards to music, I love the Blues, Rock ‘n Roll, Pop, Motown, the Oldies ... heck, almost anything but RAP, chaotic jazz, or heavy metal.
I would love double the shop space. A more efficient wood shop complete with the best quality tools.
I really enjoy this profession for it’s diversity and the creative outlet.
