My ISP also disconnects if idle for 15-20 minutes, but I think it considers downloads as activity.
Have you tried setting up your email to check for new mail every 10 minutes? I have mine set that way so I don't get disconnects if I'm still online, but not doing anything with the puter.
Hope this helps
As for an ISP for you, I can't help. I use a local company. $14/mo, unlimited usage, 2 email accounts free. All their modems are 56K or whatever is the best. (really irrelevant to me since the phone lines are so old, I've never seen anything above 31200, usually 28800 connection)
Have you checked into MSN? Have a friend on that and he's all over the country. Don't know much except they have a zillion # to dial, so wherever you are you should be able to connect with a local call.

Evenin' Joe-- Not a less than $20 deal, but , consider this-- If you are using a second or dedicated phone line for your Internet connection in order to keep your main phone line open, then you are already about halfway to a cable connection. In other words a second phone line plus an ISP add up -at least here- to what Road Runner gets for a cable hookup. To top it off, cable connection and data transfer leaves even the fastest modem in the dust. I couldn't believe the difference the first time I saw cable in action. Spoils you big time, and for myself, I would never go back to a phone line setup. Just my .02

Cable is by far the best deal. Fast....always on.......no additional phone line needed. (so you save the 15.00-20.00 extra phone line charge) It is about 40.00 a month for cable.

I have to second the DSL idea. It's always on and the equipment is usually free with a 1 year contract. It only requires a network card installed in the computer. If you can install a phone modem or sound card you can install DSL. Voice and computer can be used on the same line so you avoid a dedicated line cost. $15-20 for ISP service plus $20-25 for the phone line comes out the same as the $40 for DSL. I've had mine connected for weeks at a time without getting bumped off. Plus, if something does go wrong with the DSL line, you still get 56k dial-up service if you need it at no cost as a back up.

Joe, Get Juno. $9.95 a month, unlimited access. Includes email & web space. Doesn't include annoying banners that you can't minimize. It's faster than Earthlink, AOL and the local ISP around here. It will disconect if there's no activity. But like Chris said set up your pc to check for mail every 5-10 minutes. Here's the link to their local access numbers http://help.juno.com/access/index.html
Mention "susans_brianb" as a referral if you sign up & they'll send me $20. (: Havin' fun, Checkers

Go to www.zdnet.com & search for 'Download Wonder'. It's a program which will assist in your ability to download stuff. A couple things that it does is saves partial downloads in case your cut off & also, it simulates browser activity so isp thinks your still browsing when your really not even at the computer. It works rather well. There is a freeware version with scrolling ads at bottom which aint annoying at all. And occasionnally you'll be asked to upgrade to adless version, but not necessary.

Joe - Chris has the right idea about having a second activity going that keeps the connection live. I saw it on a tech tv show, but don't remember what program they suggested you run.
As for DSL, we have Windows 2000 here and our DSL modem connects to the LAN port. DSL is distance sensitive so you can't get it everywhere. Vic G
