I send jpg files to A LOT of people, in many locations, ... without a glitch.
But I have a handful of friends and family who are never able to see my jpg files. I've gotten to the point where I just don't send them anything anymore because they won't see it anyway.
Whether I send them as an attachment or insert it into the email message ... they just don't get it. The common element among this small group is that they are on AOL.
My question is this. What's with that? Do I need to be sending things differently to these people, or do they need to be doing something differently on their end? Is it an AOL thing?
Any input here that would shed some light on this mystery for me is invited!
Thanks much, Nettie

I think this mat be an aol/earthlink thing. I am on aol and receive .jpgs from lots of people, but my uncle is on earthlink. Whenever he sends any type of pic I have to forward it to another e-mail account to open it. His come into aol as text files.(sometimes 50 pages)
Sorry, I have no clue of a fix for this.

I know quite a few people with Aol also...and the same thing happens. They can't open the files I send. (they can't even view my signature file I have attached to each email) And yep....it's always those who have aol. I have never had it (or wanted it).

You might check to see if the AOL users have their preferences set in a manner which prevents file attachments. Otherwise, just post the images on a website and send them the URL.
Granted, AOL's web browser is horrid; it mangles image quality.

I have found that IF you want to send a .jpg to an AOL subscriber....send JUST the .jpg (and it better be a small file) and the text separatley! Otherwise, it get scrambled into jibberish! also don't send 2 .jpg's in the same Email, or they get scrambled! Evidentally AOL's browser was never designed to handle anything except small simple files. You would think that now that AOL has bought Netscape, they would "borrow" the technology to improve their browser!

If you are sending multiple attachments on one email, quit doing that! Older versions of the AOL software cannot handle emails with more than one file attached. You either need to send one file at a time or they need to upgrade to the latest version of AOL, which I dont suggest upgrading at all cause the newest is crap.
Otherwise, the problem is in a setting in the AOL software for handling file attachments. I used to know right where the setting was but havent fixed AOL in a long time.. it's probably in the Preferences in the email part. The setting for handling file attachments should be set to "MIME".

If it is available in your area (close enuff to central switching) Earthlink DSL!!! Hands Down!
3 months ago, I couldn't access the Net, called their tech line, they figgered it was the modem....had a man out with a modem in 2 hours...turned out it was a bad connection in their Covad box, which he fixed.
Can't ask for better than that!

I sure do appreciate hearing some feedback on this thread.
Don, I thought it could be an AOL/Earthlink thing at first too, but then Dave isn't on Earthlink and has troubles sending image files to AOL too. Then I started hearing simular complaints from others with regards to AOL's not being able to recieve from those not on Earthlink.
There is one AOL person I don't have the trouble with though ... and that's Dan Antonelli. Him and I share files alot without problems. But, he's the only AOL person I don't have problems with. Maybe it's because he's on a Mac?
Si, I'm glad to see your last post. I just signed on with Earthlink's DSL ... it's not activated yet, but I'm excited about it.
Adrienne, you couldn't pay me to sign on with AOL. It's funny, they just upped their rates higher than most in my area too. Crazy! Now subscribers can get less for more! Please consider giving Earthlink another try. Maybe around the 15th! hahaha! The way I see it, us graphics people need to be able to see image files!
I've been a very satisfied Earthlink customer now for 4 years. My website is now hosted by them, and I've been thrilled with my internet service all along. I'm hoping to have the same streak of good luck with them on their DSL lines.

I'm on a MAC & AOL - only because this 'puter belongs to a friend. When I get my own hooked up I WILL NOT have anything to do with AOL!!! AOL sucks out loud. Nothing but trouble. Most of what Si sends me I can't open up, but I don't want him to stop because what I CAN see is darn good stuff, usually.

Nope, there arent any good ISP's around.. they all do stupid crap..
Their only saving grace is that since most other ISP's are junk, there's no real benefit to jump ship and move on to something else.. kinda like how people tolerate windows crashing.

when you are sending the email do you use outlook express cause if you do you could try inserting the picture within the email. it's slightly different than attaching it. it appears within the email instantly. but that's what i do anyway!

I'm on aol (because I'm too lazy to change i guess), and use a mac (because I like it). I cant recall ever having a problem recieving jpg's from anyone, even when they send me zip folders (just cant read the text). But I've sent jpg's to windows users on msn and they cant see the pics, I cant help them because I dont know windows at all. Could it be that the windows/aol users dont have enough ram partitioned to aol? if they are opening the jpg in aol? what type of software are they using to see the jpg's? and have you tried sending the jpg compressed with winzip or whatever they use? that way it is sent as a smaller file and then they can uncompress it. I know there is a choice on mine to automatically uncompress files once downloaded, I'm sure window's aol would be the same, but if theres not enough ram to poen it, it wont open.

Nettie, I've had the same problem with people who se AOL and have just about given up on it for it is on the AOL side and most of the people to whom I'm trying to get pictures to don't know graphics or computers all that well so it's really ard to get them to change any settings in the AOL. I do have a University that I send a lot of e-mail to though and none of them have any graphic programs on there computers so I have been using Acrobat Reader and they all seem to be able to open that.
