This is a two part post, and hopefully they will go hand in hand.
I don't paint nearly as much as I used to, but I still have the knack to get the job done, only thing is, so much has changed in the last few years with paint, the quality of it, etc, that I need some advice on painting a large mural over an existing one on a stucco like finish on the side of a building.
There is an exising 20 x 30 painted mural now, and I need to block it out, and center it on the building, as it is presently offset to one side. It is in pretty good shape with the paint holding up well, but it's ugly and time for updating, so I'm not sure if a good pressure washing would be in order, then a good coat of blockout/ then finish coat?
I've always used oil base primers and paints in the past, and hand lettered them with One-Shot. Are there any new and improved primers or recommended (by brand name, e-mail personally if necessary... as to avoid the bullboard product plug game) Once I get the intial prep, priming and finish coating done, the lettering will be quite a project with a very large gradient blend of a moonlit lake scene with stars overhead, then featuring text and an old time beer brewery name as the focus of the ad. I jumped at the chance to do this particular job with the likely possibility of this being a prelude to a 2002 letterhead meet in my hometown.
We're trying to get the city to open it's eyes a bit on what these upcoming sign jobs can do for the tourism of our city of 12,000 people. We have a great downtown MainStreet program that is behind the letterhead meet idea, as well as the brewery that said they would roll out the red carpet for us if we hosted a meet as well. Next year is the 135th Anniversary of Leinenkugel's Brewery right here in downtown Chippewa Falls, WI, and this project will be the springboard for the other murals that follow.
Anyone interested in giving advice can post here, or e-mail me. Anyone interested in coming to Chippewa Falls, Wi next year for a meet, please voice your interest as well. I've never hosted a meet, and have only been to 3 Mike Meyer meets(including Mazeppa) over the last 8 years or so, and Mike has expressed interest in attending and possibly helping me on the current 20x30 project if his schedule allows it. I'd like to get a start on it in case Mike can't help, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Kurt,You talking MY kind of language NOW!!! BEFORE you do anyhting else,make a FULL PATTERN.Take Pictures of the "BEFORE" How old is the existing mural?How faded is it Is the paint chipping off? IF the answers are (insert years old),somewhat(enough to make pattern from),Not to bad(pressure wash anyway) Then how would you explain the longevity??? I would say OIL BASED PAINT! was used,and should be re-used for the same reason.(guess I will get Flamed for that statement)IF you gonna be dragging the Letterhead name into it,then use the BEST!! Sherwin Williams Industrial Primer/Block Sealer,Ronan Background White,Chromatic Bulletin Colors.ALL of these Products where formulated for the Sign Industry as to coverage,durability,and UV factors(better known as Lead) REMEMBER:It is not what they took out,that matters as much as what they(or you)can put back in for the same results This stuff "IS NOT" house paint!!! Lienenkugel, now that's without a doubt the best beer I've ever tasted! I would be interested myself if the timing is O.K. I like the area and I wonder about hotels and such things as that. Being an old wall dog and former drinker of that great brew ( used to have it shipped to me from Wiconsin, cause they did'nt sell it in Illinois ) There might have to be more than one mural to do for an event to happen and if you go to past events in this Lettervile, site you can find lots of pictures to show the towns people to get them stirred up and come forth with a few grants ( $$$$ ). Kent and Judy Smith, have a guide to meets that can be purchased for a small sum and it tells all about how to do it. Anyway, keep this thing rolling if you can make it worth while to get some folks involved in it. Talk about some of the great fishing (maybe a contest) or other things of interest in your area that can turn into fun or side trips or.... I'll even become a sponsor if you get it worked out. Since missing last years meet in Boise, and being unable to attend this years meet, I am having a serious case of the blahs.
My hubby Don (you met him briefly in Mazeppa) has already agreed to book holidays for next summer's meet, and Chippewa falls is exactly the distance we drove to Mazeppa.
Put us down for two, we'll definately be there!!!!

I haven't been able to check the board since I made this post a few days, ago, but I'm glad to see some response. Having met 2 of the 3 of you (PK and Sue) at Mazeppa, and Jack (nice to meet you) that's great to be able to have actually talked with you before and know what you are all about. Since I made this original post, the mural project has fired right up... got the specs and artwork in the mail 2 days ago, and sent in my proposal to Leinie's and I should see some money down in a few days, and I hope to start this project in the next 7 to 10 days.
P.K.: The existing mural is probably about 20 to 25 years old and there really isn't much paint chipping, but just more fading than anything. Not the greatest brushmanship in the world, but what's going to replace it will be very nice. I think the pressure wash, blockout and oil base finish coat seems the way to go. Does Ronan "chalk" though? I've used ValSpar with much success in the last 15 years on MDO without chalking. I would guess it could be the same on the side of the building, but when it comes right down to it, there is so much color in this project, a "white" background won't be necessary anyway!
I think what will really jumpstart this meet for next year is the photos I'll be posting in hopefully 2 to 3 weeks of this mural we'll be doing. We have about 4 to 5 other potential sites for Leinie's murals right in town for next year. The potential meet has been kept pretty quiet until we were sure we could get the go ahead and variance for this 20 x 30, so now that the ball is rolling, it should get quite a response from the community.
The best part is that we have some people ready to bend over backwards to get some signpainters in town next year including the Main Street Assoc. and the fine folks at Leinies.
Glad to hear you're a Leinie's drinker Jack, I think you'd be impressed with the brewery tour and free samples!
More information to come as we move along.

As soon as I can come down off the high of hosting the Duck Soup Splatter Jam here in McCalla on Sept 14,15,16. I would like to do some wall dogging with ya!Maybe we can get Sam Saniflippo(one if the 3 Amigos)in Mazeppa to grap a fitch too.Concerning the White background:Go ahead and use what you are already having success with,as to non-chalking.YES White is "very"nessesary in order for your colors to show up better.With any Luck Bill Masters will show up with a fist full of brushes. Keep us posted.
