Any suggestions as to 'reasonable priced' substrate for signs at a cemetery honouring the veterans that would last a few years?
A client is interested in 5 identical, approx. 18"x24" signs...and 'cast' is out of their budget.
Aluminum is all I'm coming up with, but how do you make it look like it should and last? I would like to use something like SparCal Copper Scratch Poly #2404 with black vinyl letters and coat it with something, but it wouldn't last...or some sort of patina look.
I know you all have a wealth of information that is invaluable and share it so liberally. I'd like to do this job. I don't have an engraver.

Bernice I do a lot for the local council cemetery and I get a very good life out of premium calon and powdercoated aluminium blanks some at 7 years and counting the same materials on some of our parking signage 13 years and counting these signs can also be refurbished by polishing with a good automotie polish with silicon which makes it easier to clean off graffitti hope this helps Ian I also get a very good life from a product called colourbond here

Pre coated Aluminum blanks would be the way to go on this one!Cut your copy out of paint mask, apply as usual, roller coat nice"thick" entire background,(here you can do Patina)Let dry pull off letter to expose WHITE lettering Hope this helps!

Bernice, Corian is a solid surface countertop material (some colors look like granite) that is easily shaped & finished with woodworking tools. It can be routed or sandblasted & has UV resistance that other similar countertop materials (Avonite, Fountainhead, etc.) lack. It's fairly expensive but you do get a good value (like SignFoam or gold leaf). I've used it for some small plaques with the lettering engraved with a v-groove bit in a hand-held router & it looks alot like granite. Try these links for more info: www.corian.com www.babbart.com www.signweb.com/dimensional/cont/poolsign.html Check with any shop in your area that fabs Corian countertops & try for the piece that is left over from the sink cutout for an easy way to try it. This stuff has alot of potential as a sign material. Since budget is a consideration you're probably better off with the suggestions for aluminum but if you can find some cut-outs you might be able to come up with something really unique for a cemetery setting.

Buy a Wall Magic kit, do a Paisley background on Dibond, premium film copy, coat with Pelucid. It'll be around after they bury ALL of us.
Another option,....use polished aluminum or brass, imitation gold leaf, coat with Crystal Brite. Same results, but I'm getting cremated.

You might consider sandblasting landscaping pavers. There are lots of nice shapes, they are flat and can placed in the ground even with the surface, and they should sanblast ok. Vic G

Thanks to you all for your helpful information. I want to know about all of these techniques even though I need to decide on one for this job.
Ian, I'm interested in this powder coating...I'm going to check it out...I think I have some info on this in one of the magazines.
Pat, where do you get your pre-coated aluminum blanks? Is there anything special about this?
I did do some checking this pm on that CD disk...some of it is OK.
Chris, you were very helpful. I did check out the links. I sure do like the style of doing this...will have to check if I can find some of this Corian.
Pierre, thanks for your info...I have yet to find out what a Wall Magic kit is, Pelucid and Crystal Brite.
Dennis, thanks, also...I may just have to talk to you about Avian. I'll check here to see if they may supply it here somewhere.
Victor, as usual, you are always helpful.
Mark, nice to see more of on here again. You must be over some of the big rush jobs for the film industry.

Sorry I didn't reply earlier to your q about corain. Thanks for the great description Chris!!
Yes, as Dennis mentioned, there are alternatives to it. I'm assuming the name changes depending on where you are in the world. The name of that other product (here) is Lassica. Works good as long as you cut it with good carbide blades. Good luck!
