Hi all,

I have to do an outdoor mural on a wall. First of all, should I use the standard One Shot paints, and if so, any additives to help flow, blending, etc.

Secondly, the customer has inquired about some sort of top coating to put over the mural to make it easier to remove graffiti. Is there such a product?? (Please, no replies from the wiseguys, such as "How about a tarp?") :-)

Thank you!!

Other than a barbed wire barricade with armed guards & a tour quide for close viewing, the best option imho would be to use a compatible uv protective clear coat thick enough to seal the graphic & resist any chemical solvents used to remove "tags" by the spray bomb wannabe artists. My best guess would be at least 2 or 3 coats of one shot uv acrylic clear. That way ya have some sort of barrier between the spray paint & markers used by the vandals that if need be can be washed with solvents yet not damage the graphic.Afterwards ya can reclear any areas cleaned.I most definately would test an inconspicuos area first.

Jone's cream , Smith's cream can be used for blending One-shot as well as a flow enhancer, also penatrol can be used as a flow enhancer.

Should you use one-shot? If you want to,

What ever you feel comfortable with. If you do clear this mural then you could use other less durable paints for the mural.

What do you paint murals in now?

I personally would use enamels and I would not clear coat it for protection, that way I could repaint it and repair it if it does happen. I have never cleared a wall but I'm sure it would be expensive. Not to mention the sags and drips you would get.

As far as graffiti proofing a mural, IMHO there is no way to fully gauranty this, don't even bother offering a method to your customer, unless you want to be called after the job gets vandalized.

Maybe you can paint the mural on the "Tarp" so he can roll it up at night. ( a joke )

But not a bad idea!!

I do a lot of mural work and "cross fingers" have yet to have one "tagged"! It seems to be an unwritten law here in Australia not to touch artwork.

There are two anti-graffiti products on the market here.
One is "sacrifical" .. that is it washes off with a solvent provided without damaging the paint underneath but has to be recoated.
The other is a "two-pack" type clear that is resistant to all solvents.
Both are reasonably expensive.

I use high gloss water based enamels primarly for drying time. The only time I use a UV Clear over the top is where the mural is exposed to direct sun all day. Again there is an excellent water based glaze avaible here that was developed for the building trade to cover "faux" finishes on walls. It also gives you a nice finish if you have been spraying colour on.
Talk to your local paint supplier.
Best of luck
