Recently i completed signs for a movie using
latex paint as backgrounds.

http://www.markfair.com/sketchbook

I then hand lettered with one-shot lettering enamels.

I had so much fun i have decided to do antique reproductions of signs from the 40's and 50's to sell and display in my showroom.

I called sign painter guru and my buddy Mike Meyer and he suggested if i wanted to letter with acrylic paints then order water based brushes from Mack Brush.
http://www.mackbrush.com
I did and they are great.
I used floetrol to help the paint flow.
I love it!
easy clean-up and the latex flows almost as well as 1-shot!

any tips on this medium or techniques on antiquing signs would be much appreciated.

Dittos on what Cheryl said Mark!
Mr Mike is a good one with those antique looking signs...and I understand he's had some recent experiences with hand lettering with house paints
I use the Mack waterborne brushes a lot and find they serve the purpose fine...price is good too.

I have a friend who is an excellent sign designer and maker , and he has totally switched over to latex based paints for the backgrounds, and any outlines, shading, etc.
His stuff is top of the line too. I've been experimenting with the latex paints for backgrounds, and they work great. I think I'll order me a set of them brushes and give the lettering a try too. If Mark, Mike, and Adrienne like em, how can I go wrong?

hey bubba deaton!

Terry Teague opened my eyes as far as backgrounds with latex paints at the "December in Dixie" at my little ole shop back in 1999.

1-shot and latex flow nicely.

through experience i have learned that acrylic painted backgrouds last longer in a "sunny" environment.

this is the deep south.

anyone, please correct me if i am wrong.
it all depends on "application"

i recently re-finished an attorney's sign i had previously painted with oil based paints.
i sanded and gave it a coat of latex primer,
great results with the finish coat of water based paints.

the sure way to test a surface is the old "thumbnail" test.
drag the thumbnail in an abrasive fashion across the surface.

latex ramblin' man,

mark

Mark,
Again dittos on what Cheryl said. I love to use an old tooth brush(not your spouses) and splatter the edges heavier than the whole thing and I rub my glazes heavier on the edges too.
Now let me ask you...these Mack brushes, do they work with the deka or ronan water based and can I use floetrol with them. I have many quarts that I'd like to use up! I have had great results with krylon latex for backgrounding but they are kinda transparant. If I faux finish something I use deka clear(for a all over smooth finish) or mix acrylic paint with the deka to make a glaze.
I noticed the old clock in the bottom photo. The town had me paint their black cast one with a verdigre(sp?) finish--aged copper. When I got done and stood back to look at it some guy stopped and ask how I was gonna clean that copper back up!....guess it looked OK!

thanks for your responses.

there are no rules when it comes to "stressing" a panel.

slap it, beat it with a claw hammer, take a belt sander to it,
spritz a thin wash. (mix up a windex bottle with 2 parts burnt sienna, the rest H20

well,i take that back, the only rule is to know when to STOP!

when working with "water based" paints, let one coat dry, then apply the next.

a little patience is required.

thanks,
mark
