I bid on a job for three 4x8 billboards for a customer. I worked on a design for close to three hours and emailed the proof as a jpeg. Didn't get the job cause price was $95.00 per 4x8 above another bidder. They just installed the sign and guess what! My exact design! The customer emailed the jpeg for the bids. I usually print the proof along with a copyright notice but this time I figured I would save time and email.. last time...to all you signmakers out there...if you get a proof from a client ask them where the proof came from and the least one can do is to change it at least a little bit... nothing I can do cause it wasn't mentionned anywhere in the email. No wonder the other fella was low....

Condolences, mon! Why don't you name the jerk that did it so the legit signfolks in your area won't be taken in? Any sign shop worth it's salt won't indulge in that schtuff. We probably turn away three jobs a month just because a client is playing that game. "Oh, what a world, what a world."

I'd send them a bill for the design. And do let them know you don't appreciate it. The nerve of some people. I wouldn't patronize or recommend their business either until they make it right. Sorry it happened, I can relate.

Live -n- learn ... huh. I don't e-mail proofs ... I upload them to my server in a simple html page I have set up with a no right click script ... if they do right click an alert pops up telling them it's MY PROPERTY TILL PAID FOR and that it has a verifiable date that it was uploaded with copyright symbol. Then I e-mail them the address where they can "look".
Send them the bill for the design and let them know you have the e-mail stored as verifiable proof it's yours. (even if you didn't save it)

Hey Mark...That is a good idea about the "no right click" script...Any chance you'd be willing to share the script? I checked it out on a website and they say that the javascript for no right clicking doesn't work for Netscape???

Mark, right click is not bad to start with but you can save the page as html and go in with a program like pagemill and retrieve the jpeg...right click in conjunction with the word copyright on a 45 degree angle right unto the jpeg is probably what I'll be doing along with uploading to my page. Good ideas guys.. Thanks for the input. I am going in the morning to meet with the customer...will keep you updated....

Yeah, I know a no right click script isn't any kind of real security ... I use it as a cheap trick to let them know I'm paying attention. Dave, here's one (I have no idea if it works in netscape)
