This is one of those ones that I feel I should know but can't for the life of me think where it is. I've got one machine here that when shutting down, gets to the "It is now safe..." message but because of the type of on/off switch on the front panel, cant be turned off unless it is switched off at the power supply switch at the back of the case. (Hitting the on/off button on the front of the case at this point just restarts the machine) Where the heck is the shutdown configuration/options? TIA, David

Dave..in BIOS is there a feature enabled called "soft shutdown" or something like that...Sometimes when Win 98 didn't shut down my puter and I had to shut it down with the button I had to hold the button in for 4 seconds before the thing would shut down,,and sometimes it would start back up in a few minutes all by itself. hehehehe
In the couiple of weeks with Win2000 shutdowns work perfectly!

I'm confused by your question David. Your shut down options are in your start - shut down menu - then you can choose to shut down, restart, etc.
Is your machine having problems shutting down?
Does it get to the shut down screen then just sit there?
There is a patch avalable from microsoft for machine's with ATX power supplies (like yours) with shut down problems.
Go to their website and download it.

I would like to know too. My Win 98 system never gets to the "it is now safe" screen like my Win 95 one does. After I click "start" "shutdown" "ok", mine shuts down automatically. If the cottonpickin' thing fails to shut down(as it does sometimes) I have no choice but to push my reset button and wait for the contrary thing to boot up again.

Dennis, It gets to the final shutdown message but cant be shutdown because the switch on the front of the case is not of the type that toggles to either on or off. The patch may be what I need and I'm having a look around MS.com as we speak. What I really need, is for the machine to shut itself down upon reaching the "It is now safe..." message. I have built 3 other identical machines all running the same release of Win 98 and they all shut down in the correct manner, this one for some reason doesnt want to play the game. Thanx, David

It was in the bios. Specifically the option Dave mentioned. Thanks for the jump start for the brain cells Dave, I was screwing around in the power management settings in Windows but it just didnt occur to me to look at the bios power settings. Thanks to all, David
