We have discussed MDO versus alumalite and others many times here, and MDO seems to be the least of choices for good reasons. I just went by a customers business and noticed the sign I did a month ago delaminating ( veneer warping). Man, that was 3/4" two sided with a good primer and 3 coats of paint, especially on the edges. There is nothing more I can do but quit using the damn product. What scares me is, I have over 50, forty inch circular logos out there already for a national auto liquidator. What condition are a lot of those in? This week I have to start another order for 25 more, should I switch? How do I ween them off this? And what cuts and shapes as well as mdo? If I tell them the reason why the change, suspicions will be overly raised on all the past jobs now. Omega board is a product I have not used much, is it a better option? Definately not crezon.

Hey, David. Omega board is a better option than MDO, but have you tried 4mm Dibond yet? Tensile strength is right there for use as a 4'x8', and it sure looks better. I've been using it now for 4 years. Our generals prefer it for job site signs because it's completely reusable. It's fast to cut and tough enough for any sign. We even channel redwood 2x2s and make slide in frames for it. Looks great.

David, I think I'd contact my distributor and send him a photo of the sign. Also, I would ask the distributor to start carrying Signal rather than Crezon.

David....a few years ago I had the same problem. I took photos of what happened. Most of the MDO I used got huge bubbles and was peeling. Simpson gave me quite a bit of credit. I don't think I had to buy MDO for over a year. But I am using more and more Polymetal and Intecel. MDO is too much work and unreliable anymore.

David, more and more contractors of new homes are using MDO for building purposes compared to signmakers using it for signage.
If you were a manufacturer of MDO, who would be more important to satisfy? Its all in supply and demand.......

In the case of my 25 piece order I am going to try Omega board. For a lot of signs already, I do use alumalite but think I will step it up to Dibond. Thanks for the responses.

Luckily and also unluckily...there are many versions of MDO If you are able to get the good stuff...it is just about perfect for signs, all the rest is crap! Luckily for Californians, Commercial Sign Supply carries the good version of MDO and will supply it pre-coated or just primed. Since they buy it by the truckload, they insist on the right grade...never had a problem with it. I might add that I am not connected with Commercial sign Supply...just a customer!
