As I sit here in a cyber cafe enjoying a chicken sandwich and ginger ale in downtown Ottawa...I am pondering over the last couple of days and the amazing things i learned and saw before me!!! I cannot begin to describe the wonderment I felt watching my heros do thier magic on those murals. The fact that i got to dabble on one was the coolest thing I've done in a long time. I wish all of you could have been there to experience it too. Nancy and Noella did a great job putting on one of the best meets ever!! As I left town, having hithched a ride to Ottawa with Dan Sawazky and Larry Whan we just happened to catch the guys installing 'our' mural!! It was a very satisfying feeling to see it go to it's final location overlooking the St. Lawrance river.
I'm still reeling from all the events of the weekend, the music, the friendship, the incredible talent..... A Oh...did i mention I'm in prison here?! It's a youth hostel now, but man, what a creepy place!! Very old and facinating tho!

Thanks Steve, for the great pictures. What a privlidge to be there with the best of the best. And what an honor to be able to work on their creations. This old man gets as excited as a little kid when it comes to meets like this. How lucky we are to have the most wonderful organization of talented people. Thanks too, to Nancy and Noella for organizing the perfect Walldog meet. Everything in one place, we have arrived.

I'd like to thank Nancy and Noella for putting on such a great meet, too. I can't say I really helped with anything, but to see all these people I admire working together was a real treat, and I think I know a little more about what this whole thing is about, too. I learned a few lessons that should make me a better person and a better Letterhead. ...and I plan on getting more involved next time.
I hope to post pictures when I have some time.

I finally caught up on my sleep enough to think things through a little about the fantstic meet in Cornwall. What a rush it was!
It was pure pleasure to lead one of the murals done there.
For me it started back at the beginning of the year when I was asked to do help out. Within days I got my package in the mail. On opening it I was amazed at the organization and obvious planning that had already had been done. Nancy had digitized the material and put it on a disk for me to peruse. Printouts of the pictures and background material was all there.
It was an easy task to put together the maquette for the project. THis was approved without any fuss and I was asked to forward colors for the paints I needed.
On my arrival at the meet a little early I went into the gym where we would be painting and EVERYTHING was ready. The blank "canvas" was there and in front of it was the paint stacked neatly in rows - all the colors I had asked for. The projector and cord, the scaffold, the ladders, everything I and everyone else needed to start the project.
NO FUSS what so ever.
It was a far cry from the vast majority of murals I have tackled over the years in every respect.
And the best part was yet to come!
From the opening moments the meet was about the true meaning of letterheads. Everyone was there to help and share their knowlege. Side by side were the legends of the sign industry along with the beginners and all us in between.
I saw old friends and made many new ones.
It was a happy event.
And everywhere I looked eye candy was being created before our very eyes.
I learned a great deal in the time I was there. About painting and especially about life. Thank you to all who were so generous to share their knowlege and experiences so freely with me. And thanks too to the generous folks who were kind enough to paint along with me on my mural and also to those who were kind enough to allow me to help out on their projects.
A special thanks again to Nancy & Noella for hosting the event.
I look forward with great anticipation to the next letterhead meet I am able to attend!

Looks like I can only put 8 images in any one post. There was still 2 murals to go up late Sunday afternoon, so we took off to see some people and returned to Cornwall to get the last photos.

It was truly a beautiful meet, with beautiful art and beautiful people. It was definitely "keepin'the spirit alive". I truly enjoyed meeting new friends (Dan S.-among others)and renewing acquaintances. What stories you can tell, Steve! Congrats on your sign design win!
Did I mention that everything was beautiful?

Now that I have caught up a little on sleep I can look back over the past weekend with greater appreciation. What a great time with old and new friends! It is indeed an honor to be in the same room with so much talent.
Dan was everything I had expected him to be and it was exciting to just be around him. Thanks Dan for your great positive attitude.
It was humbling to be able to work along side Gary Anderson. What a tremendous talent!
And Nancy and Noella. What words can you put together to express what they did for all the rest of us? "Thanks" just doesn't seem to say it all, but hopefully they get the message.
Nancy Bennett did her usually super job as MC and general encourager of all.
Each of these events leave me with a renewed appreciation for our craft and the ones who work so hard to keep the spirit alive. The entire four days I was there I didn't hear one discouraging word or complaint....at least, not one expressed seriously. My hat is off to all those who planned and put on this outstanding event.
Some of the most exciting memories are of the first timers who jumped in and caught the Letterhead spirit. There was an electricity in the air that is not easily defined.
In what other profession could you find people who are willing to take a week off from their business and family (and lose money), spend $1,000 or more, work their tails off for 15 hours a day, and then thank others for the privilege of loosing sleep? Ain't it great?
If you have never attended one of these you probably cannot understand the comments of those who do. At the next opportunity, do whatever it takes to get to one. It will change your outlook on this great profession.
