I am trying to get use to using waterbase background paints. I have a project right now that has Sherwin Williams acrylic latex paint for the background, I will be hand lettering the copy in One Shot lettering enamels, but need to put an arrow on both sides of the sign in refective vinyl. I called Avery to find out if the XR1000-7 yr reflective will adhere properly and they said they would call back after checking into it. I know some vinyls will not adhere well to certain paints. I thought I would ask the experts here at the bullboard. I probably should have done that in the first place.
I put a scrape piece of the reflective on the corner of the sign, but didn't feel it stuck very well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

i have had good luck with high performance vinyls on latex backgrounds as long as the latex is a gloss latex. semi-gloss and dead flat, no luck.
1. Will the latex enamel stick to the surface? (who's latex..Wal Marts or Benjamine Moore's paint.
2. Will the refective stick to the latex?
Theorectically YES, but.....too many factors play into this that we are not aware of.
In every case I've seen, the latex enamal will hold up longer than the 1 Shot, but then again, we don't know how the surface was prepared on this project.

Adhesive system on reflective is not the same as on premium films. This one is purely a roll of the dice. Delamination will definitely be faster that premium film. As Davey said, lots of odd factors enter with this one.

The substrate is MDO with 3 coats of Jay Cook's primer (sanded and tacted between coats) and Sherwin Williams brand acrylic latex gloss paint (3 coats sanded and tacted).
Pierre,
If high performance vinyl will stick to the latex better than reflective---should I cut the arrow in high performance and then put another arrow in reflective on top? Or would this not help the situation?
I wish I didn't have to put reflective on this at all, but the customer wants it.

Pam I can tell you that the premium film adhesive will bond better, but I've actually never tried refl. over premium film. Is it too late to clearcoat before installing the film?

Clear coating was going to be my next question. I have Frog Juice, Sign Restoring Clear and a Chromatic clear. The customer would like the sign early next week to replace the directional sign that is missing for their business. Would any of these clears work alright on latex? Should I do some test spots first?

Pam, of course I mess with a specific clear for everything, but you don't have time to get it now. Use Chromatic. It's a better bet than installing on the flat latex coating. Call on my toll free if you need more help. Anytime at all.

BTW, pam. Make sure you begin with a light mist coat of Chromatic, let it stand three hours and then put on a decent coat, but not heavy.

I have been wanting to try some of the clear that you have mentioned in other post. I have to quit procrastinating (sp) and just get a hold of you about the stuff. I will try to catch you next week to get some for future projects.
thanks, Pam
P.S. This is not a flat latex background, but even with the gloss, I don't feel the piece of reflective I stuck to it is holding as well as I would like. I am going to try the clear coat. I appreciate all suggestions from everybody.

Pam, we have been using nothing but water based paint for backgrounds for over 10 years and have never had an adhesion problem. We use Frazee (available here in Southern California) Mirro-Glide acrylic latex enamel. The color holds up better than anything else We've used. The Scotchlite seems to be easier to peel off, but I've never seen it come off by itself and I don't think that has anything to do with the fact that its on water based paint.

Chuck, you're right about that. The reason is usually lack of gloss and porostiy. Ever notice how film will NOT bond to primer? Especially aoutomotive primer.

I've used Frog Juice over Porter's semi-gloss , using a paint-mask, & adherring premium vinyl. This was done with real small lettering last October & just checked it last week & it's still ok. Lightly scuff surface before applying frog-juice.
Good Luck,
