News item from NPR:
The Connecticut State Legislature is scheduled to debate whether the $300 Federal tax rebate should be taxed as "income".

My reaction to this is unprintable, but I'm sure there are others who aren't quite so inhibited.

Can't blame the politicians, Cam. As long as people continue to see Government as the "nursemaid to life" the politicians are going to have to find the money some how.

But, I wouldn't mind finding out who came up with the stupid idea. That kind of mindless taxation is what started a tea party in Boston a while back.

OK Alan, here's what you should do. Don't cash your "rebate" check when it comes. I want you to tear it up and mail it back in protest. That'll teach those evil people a lesson.

How dare they try to give some of my money back!

Alan,
Never be happy with the $600....but its a start in the right direction! Besides its just a retroactive rebate. The fact is that the tax cut should have been much bigger and not so backloaded. I'm tired of my money being wasted on art made of fecal matter and on programs that turn people into helpless addicts to the governmental nipple.

And if I may borrow something from what Neil Boortz said last night.....

I'm amazed at how little people understand about economics. You can take what most people correctly know about economics, shove it up an ant's butt, and it'll roll around like a baby's toy rattle!

Not that anybody here really cares, but if you didn't pay state taxes on it when it went to the Federal government, then you would owe taxes on it when you get it back, the logic being that you would have paid state tax if you had kept it in the first place. Just imagine - CPA's do this for a living! Yikes!

Cam, if you really want to get spooled up about taxes, you don't have to look very far. You go to the gas station with your state and federal tax paid money an buy gas that includes a federal tax, which is then taxed with a state tax. And then when you die, there's another bite. I have no idea what our "real" tax is, with all these taxes on top of taxes, but it would not surprise me if it were 50% of every dollar in the country.

My head hurts. Time for some of Glenn's quiet time. Put me down as Elmer Fudd.

Here's a thought....

What will it cost for the state to collect the taxes on the $300? Assuming the state were to take 10% ($30), what will it cost to process all of the paperwork?

Joe,

That $300 can easily be worth $1200 or more if properly invested and applied to your retirement.

That's the problem with people these days. They never see the full potential of what can be if they take what they have and be smart with it. Too many people see $300 as just $300. They see a clump of squirrel hair and don't see the French Master quill that can be made from it and a piece of wood.

There are just too many short sighted people in this world blinded by envy because someone has what they do not. They blame "The Rich" for their troubles and are easily swayed by the enticing words of Liberal Left's emotion-based arguments. Yet, no one has ever seen a poor person create jobs and help others generate wealth.

What people really need to do if they want to be successful is get up off their lazy butts, quit their whining and start working smart. There are no quick'n'easy fixes in life. No politician can make me rich, but Left is doing their darnedest to make me poor and call it being "fair." You get out of life what you put into it. But there are those who are all too happy to tax it away from you because you have something that someone else doesn't (and hasn't earned).

If I send you $3,000.00, Glenn, will you please invest it for me so I can turn it into $12,000.00? I need the money quick! By the way...how long do I have to wait for a return on my investment? Hopefully, not the rest of my life.

I wonder how many Americans are going to "invest" their refund. I'd say about...2 or 3. That should really kickstart the stock market.

I would say there are literally thousands of "poor" people that have created jobs and helped others create wealth. Every entrepeneur with a good idea, lots of hard work and perseverance has built up thousands of businesses in this country that have employed millions of people. It doesn't take only rich people to start a company. This country was built on the backs of the poor.

Three hundred bucks IS three hundred bucks...to most Americans. To me, it's candy money. I think I'll invest mine in Snickers bars and Life Savers. At least I'll get immediate satisfaction from the "handout".

Oh...and Myra, you DO need to visit more often!

Here's a prime example of pessimism vs. optimism.

Mark,
You forget Hillary converted $1000 into $100,000 in just one year.

Last year my wife converted $1000 into $1500 through some very wise and cautious investing.

A customer of mine converted a $1000 investment into $4000 so far this year. But, he did it through some very risky investing. Remember, the greater the risk, the greater the return.

My own maternal grandparents who lost their farm in the Great Depression started with nothing, but by living modestly and squirreling away every penny they could through the years are quite well off and have no need of their S.S. checks (and yet still put them into CDs even today at 80 years of age). They spend more time enjoying cruises than you can shake a stick at.

quote:
I would say there are literally thousands of "poor" people that have created jobs and helped others create wealth. Every entrepreneur with a good idea, lots of hard work and perseverance has built up thousands of businesses in this country that have employed millions of people. It doesn't take only rich people to start a company. This country was built on the backs of the poor.

Name one person who was poor when they hired someone and made them rich.

I have no doubt that a poor person made himself wealthy (a relative term) through hard work and perseverance and then hired people and provided an opportunity to become successful and wealthy. My grandparents and parents first come to mind.

My point is that it is up to you, the individual, that decides your successes, not a bureaucrat in DC. And, if someone decides to cut my taxes and send some of MY money back to me, I'm not going to complain. I'm going to see it as an opportunity.

Just remember, the leaders of the Democratic Party were against ANY tax cuts before Dubya was sworn in. Lieberman did not support the Rebate until December and even now is against any across-the-board tax cuts. Instead, he favors still the Gore plan of "targeted tax cuts". Only, the problem with "targeted tax cuts" is that rules stipulating who got the tax cuts prevented anyone getting a tax cut except those who pay no federal taxes.

Hmmm...I better stop here. I'm turning this into a long post.

BTW, you're right, Mark.....Myra should speak up more often. No one could meet anyone nicer than her.

Glenn, you make it sound like people who vent about taxes are lazy. Well, this area is very affluent, and I can tell you first hand that people making the big bucks complain about taxes too.

Big companies do create lots of jobs, and we would not have the technology we have without them, but small employers like you and me keep more people working than the big companies.

Victor,
If I came across that way, I didn't mean to. I vent against taxes all the time. My problem is with those who rail against tax cuts period and blame "the Rich" for their own lack of success in life.

*****

And now, I will rail against unfair taxation....

"The Rich" pay the most in taxes and IMHO deserve the greatest dollar amount of tax cuts. Those of us who earn between $20k and $50K pay only 7.6% of the total tax revenue. "The Rich" who earn $200k or more pay 47.5%. You have to remember that the average median income in America is less than $30k.

The Rich and well-to-do, the achievers in our society, are paying the freight. Yet it is they who will never get a tax cut if the Dems get their way because they "don't need it, its unfair," and "the Rich have more than they need" according to people like Daschle and Gephardt. Their retoric is pure Socialism and they've aimed it squarely at those in the $20-50k brackets.

The Government took in $2,025,000,000,000 in tax revenue last year. Bush's tax cut for this year is $80 billion (too small IMHO). The Democratic leadership (Daschle and Gephardt) are screaming that we can't afford it. Even though with a $80B tax cut, we'd still be running a surplus.

Now, before anyone says we don't really have a surplus, the Government took in $2.025 Trillion. The Budget was for $1.8 Trillion. That is where the surplus comes from.

By the way, if anyone is interested, my figures came from an AP article, "Facts and Figures on US Taxpayers."

Shall I continue to vent?

Hypothetical question please…

Two different sign companies, one in FL, the other in PA, purchase banners from the same source. Last calendar year the FL shop purchased one every day (365 total banners) to one a month (12 banners total) for the PA shop. The vendor informs the shops that there was an error in the pricing structure last year and they want return the erroneous monies. The extra money to return totals $377.00, or one dollar per banner.

Should the PA shop expect a refund of more than $12.00?

Bob,
Mr. Daschle and Mr. Gephardt said "Yes." Its not fair for the FL based company to have so much more business than the one in PA. It doesn't need the refund so it should give it to the one in PA just to make things fair!

That shop in FL should be ashamed of itself! In fact, D & G propose an extra tax be put on the FL shop and send 22% of the collection to the PA shop as well. Daschle and Gephardt should keep the other 78% for expenses. The FL shop shouldn't be allowed to do that much business. Why, they must be involved in some unsavory business practices. Daschle and Gephardt ought to begin an investigation immediately!!

Shame..Shame..Shame!

I may be ignorant of something basic here, but I wonder: How rich was Bill Gates when he persuaded Paul Allen to come and work with him in his garage?
=============================================

I got some figures here from Cox News Service, published today.

In constant dollars, between 1979 and 1997, the annual after tax incomes of the richest 1 percent rose by $ 414.200 or 157%
The middle fifth rose by $ 3.400 or 10 %
The bottom fifth went negative by going $ 100 in the hole.

As I see it is comparable because it’s an across the board comparison of apples and apples.

The effective tax rates for all income categories declined during that period, but the biggest winners were the top 1 percent.

As enacted by congress the new tax rates on the rich will be cut from 39.6% to 35% (Bush wanted 33%)

The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities calculates that when fully phased in, the cuts will add $ 50 000 to the $414.200 mentioned above in the coffers of the top 1%
Will add $ 600 to the middle fifth’s $ 3.400,
and will add $ 70 to the bottom fifth’s minus $100 which means they stay in the hole.

It was called hogs at the trough politics in the article I am quoting, and seen as a damaging policy for the common good. Concern was voiced over this cart before the horse tax cut, since we only have an outline of a federal budget in place – but the promises of a military build-up, prescription coverage for seniors and increased education spending are still ringing in our ears without any solid proposal of how to pay for them after giving back so much tax revenue.
I know this has been talked about plenty. But I thought it may be worth looking at the figures presented in a very plain way without excess interpretation. I am also attempting to stay away from "liberal" emotionalism.
Of course it is our money. But it is our collective contribution to being civilized and for funding a capacity to manage our social problems. It’s a matter of evolution.

=============================================

The Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

I think that when Andres Serrano put a crucifix in urine and managed to get it into an exhibit it was unfortunate. (I actually saw the thing and it was gloriously golden and startlingly boring otherwise)
For that to bring about a cut in the general funding for Art, and for general grants to be cut is ridiculous, and punishes and diminishes all of us, since it happened, now and in the future.
I think Robert Mapplethorpe's homosexual photo images were as shocking and scary as his other work was enriching. The rest took my breath away in its beauty, and will therefore be with me forever. In the Chicago exhibit the former were completely separated from the rest and clearly marked with warnings, therefore easily avoidable. I do not think we need federal protection and directives for what we can be exposed to. Censorship is not for me, please. I had my son along to that exhibit, he was about 18. I warned him, he saw it, it was not catching, he is married now and has a child.
Rudi Guilliani (sp?) closed down an art exhibit because a black Madonna was shown that was created with some fecal matter. He personally closed the whole show. I say: Rudi, mind your own business and go to church.
Of course there are going to be excesses. Diversity means that things are all over the place. It's what makes us strong and beautiful, it is the secret to our success.
It allows us to become discriminating and develop our sensitivity. I think little molds to put our minds in so they all come out the same is science fiction stuff. Imagine how boring it would be if everybody thought like I do.

Myra,

One thing you have to be careful of when using the stats from "The Center for Budget and Policy Priorities" is that they use a "static model", not a "dynamic model."

What "static model" means, for those of you in Lizard Lick, NC, is that they assume a fixed amount of available monies - that is it never grows. A "dynamic model" means that the amount of available monies expands as the market grows.

As to your example that the Rich got richer, who's fault is that? What specifically did the Rich do to prevent these people from becoming rich and stay poor? The interesting thing is that the number of first-time millionaires grew exponentially over the last 20 years.

I work with a lot of the poor here in Wilson. The biggest thing I see in them is a lack of will to better themselves through hard work and taking the initiative to increase their education and job skills. That's not to say that some aren't doing that, but a larger portion of them are not. Many that I've interviewed had high school diplomas yet could not do simple math (which math is an absolute must). Is this Bill Gates' fault? I think not.

As for the tax cuts, even JFK saw the benefits it would create ("A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats" speach in 1962 > i.e. - trickle down economics). When Reagan cut taxes back in the early 80's revenue nearly doubled. The problem is that social spending increased even more (defense spending did increase, but by 1/4 of social spending). Also, when Reagan cut taxes, he also removed many of the tax loopholes the Rich were using to shelter their money. This forced the Rich to invest their money or be forced to pay taxes on it. The result was that money was pumped into the economy and exposing the increasing profits to taxation, thereby increasing the additional revenue to the Government.

Joe,
Thank you for confirming what I have long suspected as to why things are the way they are.

Too many are willing to point fingers and too apathetic toward taking the time to find out what they are pointing at.
