The dog has chewed through the network cable!
Fortunately there is plenty of cable left to just put another connector on the end so I bout a bag of them, checked the colour/pin location on the opposing end of the cable and spliced it into the connector new accordingly.
Plug it back into the hub and presto! Still no go.
Am I missing something here?
Any RJ45/cable splicing veterans out there?
Of course there is.
I'd just replace the whole cable if it weren't routed through a huge variety of furniture, walls, floors...
TIA,
David

You need to match the pin/color locations with the end of the cable that was removed.

Surprise! They're different on each end of the cable.. ie: they arent wired "straight through" like normal people would have done it. How nice of them, eh? =)

David,

Is the machine you are trying to reconnect a server? If so, you may have to do like Mike has said and make a crossover cable that is different on each end. Otherwise, you should have a cable that is the same on both ends. This is a 10baseT/100baseT network right?
Did you check the rest of the Cable? maybe the pooch chewed somewhere else and you missed it...

In any case, try redoing the jack one more time: make sure the wires are pushed all the way to the front of the jack, and double check your wire layout. Sometimes you just get a bad crimp.

When you crimped down the new end, did you use an actual crimping tool, or did you improvise?

If you improvised, then you should look at the end where the copper punches down and make sure each one has made contact with the copper, and that each wire is at the end of the connector.

You might also want to confirm that the wires are in the correct order, the white/green and white/blue can look the same.

Good Luck!

Kristi

Thank you all.
It turned out as Mike posted, I needed to be checking the end that had been chewed off in order to get the colour/position.
One of those things that "should" have been obvious I suppose.
Thank you all for the replies
David
