Are you saying that you told the customer $50 for a $150 job? Then the thing to do is call the customer, apologize for your error, and let him know that the job is $150. If he doesn't want to do business at the correct price, just tell him you can't afford to do the work for $50 and give him his deposit back. Sort of depends on who you are dealing with. Most business people don't have a problem with your doing this unless they think you are playing a game. The general public can be all over the place, you never can predict what a "walk in" will do in this situation.

Glen, are you kidding about Pierre's answer? If you are, lighten up. Pierre's a good guy and it's not bad advice. Bring a peace offering and point out the addition error. Your figures were itemized correctly, just tallied wrong. You shouldn't have to eat this, but, if for some reason you don't want to admit your fallibility to the client, then have a beer and let it go.

I have to agree with Joe, Pierre is a good guy, and he's given you good advice. E-mail me if you need it explained to ya!
BTW, I had a similar experience with a $1150 invoice. The total at the bottom of the invoice was correct, but I'd left out a $100 item in the itemization above it. The client caught me on it during an audit. I could do nothing but swallow hard and mail her a check for the $100...and then drank the beer!
Good luck, talk to your client, have a freshly corrected invoice with you when you do.

just my less than humble opinion...

glenn...

this twice in less than a week that you jumped on someone's case because you didn't like their answer or lack of. you are blowing it way out of proportion. i understood the answer pierre gave you and found it to be rather humorous. take joe's advice and lighten up. sheesh....

as far as your original post... put yourself in the other guy's shoes for just a brief moment. if someone gave you an invoice that was obviously incorrect, would you have a problem with making it right? if this customer does, then refund the deposit and use a calculator next time.

have a great one!

Hey I'm lucky enough to have my wife run the office and believe you me she doesn't make mistakes when it comes to money! Now me on the other hand that would be another story all together. Moral of the story I am dam lucky to have my wife as a partner in life & in business.
Oh I forgot to mention before we worked together she was a finance manager for one branch store for a National chain of jewelery stores so money is her thing.
