has anyone got any suggestions of what to try before i take this thing in to the experts....

my calcomp drawing slate II just started getting weird. it was getting jerky and freezing a bit, so, that usually means time for new batteries. i put them in and it hasn't helped.

the pointer just refuses to go where i want it. i downloaded a driver off the net, unplugged and replugged it all. used the calcomp questionnaire to pinpoint the problem. changed the batteries in every configuration. changed the pen frequency, dumped a bunch of files.....

I'm out of ideas. i think it might be the comport it's plugged into, but, i only have one, so, before i get that replaced, any other suggestions (besides throwing the pen across the room. i'm trying really hard not to do that )

for example...i am now having an impossible time checking the email notification box, but, i can move back to here no problem....aaaarrrrrggggghhhh!!!!

Jerky motion is related to the comm port and comm port speed, but it's not neccessarily the comm port going bad. In fact, if it's the comm port, that means your system's mainboard needs to be replaced or repaired because the comm ports are on the mainboard.

I would suspect your problem is actually Windows. It may be thinking alot in the background and that tends to slow down communications as well. It could also be that Windows is just trying to take control of the comm port, something it's famous for.

If you try rebooting your system and the problem clears up at first, but then comes back after a short while, it's time to back up all your data and reinstall Weendoze, or even reformat the hard drive and start with a clean slate.

Gail,My old summasketchII+ uses the calcomp drivers, one of the problems I had once was the tablet itself being to close to the monitor. For some reason this caused alot of interferance & caused the cursor to jump about erratically.

thanks guys,

timi, that seems to be what it is for the most part, being too close to the rest of the 'puter. weird, cuz it's been in the same spot for a couple years. but, i seem to have it working for the most part when i move it as far away as the cord will let me. frustrating, but, at least i can get some work done.
