A local shopping center is remodeling. The owner decided he wanted something "upscale" from painted text on the awnings.
We coated out a sheet of white 1/2" pvc with Gerber vinyl and then cut the letters out to produce a creamy face color with a white edge that matches the signs supplied by "Big" sign company elsewhere in the plaza.
Because we are accustomed to seeing only flat text on awnings, the effect of the raised letter is eye pleasing and high impact. The pictures don't really give you the feel.
Vic, That's an excellent and creative way to letter an awning. My hat's off to you!
Well, its a rigid valance that's outdoors. I'm going to guess that you have a backer-board on the inside of the valance and have used a combination of screws (from the underside) and adhesive.
My concern was that the hardware on the backside of the awning was going to be ugly, and that customers would see it if they looked up as they left the store. We're talking $3.50 per square foot rent at this location. All of the usual backers seemed either too thick or otherwise too visible. It also made sense to have something thin enough to fit between the awning support structure and the fabric.
We decided to use the thin lexan sheeting most commonly used for trade show displays. The letters were fitted (aligned and drilled) to the lexan before leaving the shop, that that the field part was just a matter of one time alignment and assembly.
I've added a backside closeup view of the hardware. It is a clean looking installation that does not catch the eye as you exit the business.
