Anyway, "whilst" I was surfing the net one day, I stumbled into a porn site, which is easy to do without even trying.
Anyway I shut this site down and 20 more pop up.
Finally, I get them all shut down, and the next day my Wife asks me: What is this ICON on the desktop for? It says "GO IN"
"I dunno" so I stupidly clicked on it and guess what opened up? Yes, you guessed it! Big Tomatoes! Boy am I in the dog house tonight!
So, the question is: How do I keep a web site from planting an ICON on my desktop?
Is there a "firewall" switch I am suppose to turn on or something?
If there is, please give me very easy to understand instructions.

These sites have some of the best programmers working for them! Once ya hit one, they start popping in faster than ya kin click 'em off! Never heard of opne planting shortcut icon....BUT right click the icon and left click 'delete'! That will solve that problem...that's what Grundy does!

Don't forget to clear your temporary internet files and your cookies and if you do a find files on your own computer, like *.gif, *.jpg for example, you'll be shocked and amazed and possibly excited all over again!
I just did a search on my computer for *.gif and it found more files than was allowed by the find files routine (Over 10,000) and most of those are NOT porn! Most of these are advertising from AOL instant messenger advertisers. Looks like I got a lot of deleting to do.
I suggest getting ZoneAlarm if you don't already have it - it notifies you if a website or an online intruder tries to access your computer for any reason. It's got a free version that's downloadable.

I've got the pop-up code for use on my site.. they're actually much more effective than banner ads because people HAVE to pay attention to them in order to close them... very useful for e-commerce..
I've never hit any site that puts icons on my desktop though. Do you remember the site? I'd like to snag that code and use it to plop my icon on people's desktops.. =) Talk about guerilla tactics.. =)
That may have been done through a security hole in Windows/Internet Explorer using Java. Microsoft's version of Java doesnt conform to the standard (it's got a bunch of extra crap in it) and the web developers probably found a way to exploit that and gain access to drop icons on visitors' desktops.
Or it could be a very simple script that does it. I wouldnt know without being able to see a sample of the code that did it.

My understanding is the majority of these "porn storm" enabled sites are done with java. As long as your browser is java enabled, you will have this happen. Steve Gibson at grc.com has some programs that disable spyware and the like, which you can check out. I understand he is working on a newer and better program than the previous "Opt Out" that was so popular.

My brother had been using my computer one day, and there was a 'sexy lolitas' icon on the desktop all of a sudden. He didn't know how it got there (and wouldn't even know how to put it there, most likely), it must have been put there while browsing some site.
I bought a copy of Norton Internet Security 2000 off of ebay for about $15.00 brand new. You can set your security preferences, which i set at high, to block all cookies unless you specify otherwise, and to block any incoming or outgoing traffic on your computer that you don't want. This also has a cool banner blocking function, where it will remember the code for banners you come across, and next time you load the page, it won't display them.
Another program i use is Window Washer, which totally cleans out your cache and gets rid of the history files and all the temp files. First time I 'washed' my computer, it cleaned out thousands and thousands of files. It also has a 'bleach' function, so you can set the program to overwrite the files from 1 to 7 times, rendering the data unrecoverable. I bought this program on ebay for about $15 as well, though I know it is only $30 direct from the company.

As far as popup ads go, I pay attention to them only to close them but then then I leave the site as fast as possible, shutting down explorer if necessary.

Si, right clicking just deletes the icon from the desktop, however, the program is still on the computer and can be opened by going to start/programs/go_in.
I did find an uninstall icon along with the go_in icon. I hope its gone now, but I have this funny feeling that buried deep with in my computer it still lurks. So, I unplug my phone line connection at night so my computer doesn't turn itself on.
I really hate while I'm doing layouts and sign work, the computer connects to the Internet all by itself. So I unplug the phone cord. I'm not sure who is trying to get in my computer, but I don't like it.

Along with sticking a program in your puter, some will even install a "remote" reader! go to http://www.lavasoft.de and download "Ad-aware" (it's free) and check out your system!!! It can detect and remove them! I run it at least onece a week.

You dont keep a window of internet explorer open and minimized, with the letterhead BB on it do you? I have found that the ads at the bottom of the screen make IE look for a connection, and if there isnt one it opens up the windows dialer.
In the Dial-Up Network settings you can disable auto-connecting. If you use some special software provided to you by your ISP, they should have an option to disable it there as well.
My first bet is you have a web browser, email, or some other internet program (such as ICQ, AOL instant messenger, mIRC, ZoneAlarm, MS Net Meeting) open and minimized. Most internet programs will look for a connection and attempt to make one if it isnt available.
