We have always used vertical grain redwood for blasted signs. On a recent trip to California, i saw tons of blasted signs. And most were made from flat grain wood. What do you guys use? I like the flat grain look almost as much as the vertical and am considering trying some. Does flat tend to warp more than vert.? Vertical grain seems to crack easier than flat. Any experiences? Thanks for any replies.

I try to use both on the same sign. Verticle grain adds something to certain elements of the sign, while flat adds something else...Try a little of both...Experiment.

Gheesh,

We can't even get good redwood anymore. If you haven't heard of HDU (signfoam2) it might be a good time to check out the product. You can blast it to look like wood or stone easily and it will never crack or rot, no glue, no clamps, sign can go from "scratch" to installed the same day!

( do I sound like a salesman! or what? No Im not a salesman. But once you work with this product it really spoils you. You can do so many creative thins with it and very quickly.

Just my 2 cents;

Flat will warp if it's outside, unless you really bolt it down good! There are a lot of flat grain blasted signs around here and they all look like dog crap - but I guess they lasted until the check cleared, what can I say. They guy that was doing them made them out of cheap construction pine so they didn't blast deep, but it happens with redwood the same way.

Biggest problem with the "flat" grain ...it wants to "sluff of" in thin sheets as the paint cures and it never quits.
