Recently i've been having problems coming up with ideas for creative color combonations. Does anyone have a suggestion for a good article or book on coloring. Also im trying to find a color wheel to maybe help out with visualization, anyone know where i can find one?
What colors would you use on canary yellow? I have a 39 plymouth hotrod to do this week. I laid it out with luster looks purple triangular streaks down the side with imitation gold shadows underneath to "hopefully" give the impression of a natural shadow? Does anyone have any suggestions on a better color than imitation gold to use as the natural shadow?
Still new at this stuff but tryin' hard!!!!
Your advice is greatly appriciated thanks, Ryan

You're on the right track, Ryan. Purple(or violet) is the compliment of yellow. I picked up a nifty little color wheel from Walmart's paint department. A couple of good books that I have are "Color Harmony" and "Color Harmony 2" Try the Letterville Bookshop link on this page.

I do a lot of 'heritage' work here, what with Tassie having 200 years of real history I use a lot of burgundy/dark green and cream, a dash of mustard (Calon Imitation gold)is nice too. I like the sound of that colour book, I have to work hard at learning colour because (don't tell anyone) but I'm colour blind!

So you think im on the right track using imitation gold for the natural shadow on the canary? I hope it works!!
Cheryl, I don't think those colors would "float" with the customer. I had a hard enough time getting him to go with purple.....Had to reasure him that it was a "manly" purple haha. (Hot pink and teal remind me of the BIG 80's too i dont know about those)
thanks again for the input!

The color wheel may be good for signs but for hot rods and customs there is a difference of opinion. Looking at the wheel, how much of a percentage of each color should be used? Purple on Yellow, how bout yellow on yellow? Imitation gold is part of this scenario.
It all depends on what it is the owner would like to achieve with his vehicle. Does he want it to contrast or compliment, does he want his vehicle to look as if it is part of a circus or came out of *Circus Paints? ( *Circus Paints, N.J. creator of customs paint jobs for drag racing cars )
Complimentry color combinations are done to add class to a vehicle. The base color of the vehicle itself I'm sure is bright enough, everything is supposed to come together, wheels, upholstery, etc.. without looking as if it were over-done. Since every color can be made lighter or darker the choice can be left to the artists themselves to portray what the owner wants to achieve.
Persons who do this for a living are the best choices for this kind of work.......

OK.. now Joey has me on this "similar-color" kick..
39 plymouth hot rod.. I would do it all in shades of yellow.. I'm not exactly sure what that car looks like (cut me some slack, im a 25 year old in "Import-BigExhaust Tip-ville") but it sounds a bit on the classy side.
I'd probably do the "streaks" in a real pale yellow, something that barely shows up on the canary yellow, then use that imitation gold shadow.

Dang! Guess that kicks me up to the third youngest letterhead then.. (Kookabura is almost 17). It wont be long before I'm as old as Joey at this rate, hopefully by then I'll have it together.. hahahahaa.
Yeah Im not a huge fan of the import scene.. I dont mind the "clean" imports, with mild body kits and just an all around clean look to them.. but those guys with the HUGE exhaust tips, extreme body kits, fake Type R emblems on their fake "V-Tec" Greddy R/T neons just crack me up.. hahaha.
I'm more into sport trucks than anything, my truck is under construction with some pretty trick plans in the works. Unfortunately work gets in the way of the fun stuff. =)
There's alot of classics here too, since AZ is God's other waiting room. I do get to see alot of them but I'm still playin catch-up in terms of bein able to identify them on the fly.
