Talked to a customer today about some signage, logo design, and business cards. This will be a tanning salon. After we discuss some rough prices, I get the info and decide to do a couple sketches. Customer says, Oh yeah, my wife wants the colors to be purple and green cause the wallpaper and paint inside will be purple and green. Why should a sign match paint and wallpaper inside a business that can't be seen? I can use those two colors in the layouts I am sure, but I just don't understand their thinking. I have encountered this before, but usually after seeing my sketches, the customer changes their mind somewhat. Okay, now a purple background with forest green letters, and a black outline... hmmm......

In the lastest SignCraft in the tips-n-tricks section, there's a nifty idea for showing customers color combos involving a grid made up of stock vinyl materials where all the colors overlap at some point and you can compare.

Hi John.......I have a customer that always wants yellow with brown lettering. (gag) So purple and green sounds like fun to me. Purple letters outlined in lime green on a cream background. Black secondary wording in black. Nice and clean.

I have a client who came via a previous customer. He ask for some help with his business identity, logo, signage, etc. I made some layouts for him and only after three meetings and several hours of work did he finally tell me that he was an Ole' Miss fan and that anything that wasn't "medium red with a medium blue outline" was never going to make him happy.
The bill for my effort made me happy. Or at least satisfied.

Hi there John. This could turn out to be a fun type project...even incorporating their preferred colors. What i'd attempt would be to use a split panel with both of those colors as the background. At the break, I'd sponge/stipple the two so that they blended into each other. On the green portion of the background, I'd have the copy in a very pale aqua, and on the purple background, the copy would be in a pale lilac. If you wanted to really feature something prominently, that could be done in white with a tinted shade so that the shade showed as a darker green & purple. Secondary copy could then be done in the aqua or lilac.
I hope this stirs some creative juices, and I'm confident that you'll do an outstanding job for them.
