I starting a project of a double sided sign shaped very similar to a bed headboard with a post attached with ferrules (2 or 3) on each end to "sort of" detach them in appearance. The bed is planned to have a 1 1/2 redwood frame around 3/4 mdo G2S, with the top rail shaped similar to an oxen bow. The Carved and Gilded Logo is to be applied to the mdo in a 16 inch oval and the secondary copy is to be in vinyl for ease of changeability. If I use 1" HDU, and stack it 3 deep on the frame edge 1. Will the glued edges stay without cracking or showing the joint?,,,,, 2. Will the joints sand flat?,,,,,3. Will the hdu hold vinyl well on the secondary copy on a properly filled surface?(This is a firm that adds and changes partners like a bridge game),,,,, Most of all, Are the sides of the 1" HDU stong enough to hold a drilled in or tapped or screw attachment for mounting to the posts? Will this 6 foot long structure handle the side winds OK? I really am concerned about the sidewind pressures against the side attachements to the HDU Sorry for all the ?, but HDU is totally new to me. Thanx in advance. Bronzeo

Hey, Bronz......I'm having a hard time visualizing your format. I can tell you that HDU, drilled and set for screws would HAVE to be 22 pound to guarantee the strength I think you're indicatng. The HDU adhesive from Precision Board will end up bonding stronger than the hdu itself and the whole works sands beautifully smooth. Can you post a drawing of your format? This one interests me. I've done some hellatious large HDU work and never experienced wind load damage, but it's all based on mounting methodology. If you can clarify thios for me I'm sure I can help you.

Ok Pierre/others? Lets see if I can do the photo thing again. I find it amazing that you can produce the file, print it to paper, take a digital photo of it on your desk, stick it into the computer, ftp it to another site, and send it all the way around the world with better results than you can change a CDR file into a usable gif or jpg. Hopefully Corel's filters have improved in their latest edition. The logo is hard to read, but it is what I have to deal with here, I'm not sure that it matters, as the secondary copy gives up the info. It and the gold lines are planned to be gilded.......My next thought here is to mortise out HDU on both sides and glue them together for about a 3 inch thickness, and using a 3/4 inch MDO panel for a center insuring some strength. Then doing the carving on the logo in HDU, and the gold Striping on a routed edge of the HDU Frame. I will probably have to add a stip of trim for the cross stipe so I don't have to carve into the MDO Finish, which I'm sure would lead to problems. Well here goes the photo

OK....got it. My recommendation is to slot the posts to accept the MDO and take the carved overlay right up flush with the posts. Use the PB hdu adhesive to bond the whole works right at the intersecting points on the posts and inside the slots. This will eliminate the need for any screws at all. Inlet the MDO one full inch or more into the slotted posts. You can use 15 pound HDU if you do it that way. Be sure to use the PB hdu adhesive to bond the whole works. Incredibly strong schtuff. Good looking piece. Post the finish photo! :^)
