The Canadian Government has introduced draft legislation that will restrict and limit the uses of "Reproduction Technology". The legislation will cover such things as Cloneing, Envitro fertilization, The sale & storage of Embryos, Stem Cell Research, and Surrogate Parenting. While these subjects cover a wide scope, and some tend to affect folks on a very personal level, I was wondering how some of you might feel about having such legislation ruling & governing your lives.
I'd be particularly interested in the viewpoint of those professing to be Christians, since Jesus Christ was one of the very first surrogates of record.

Legislation here is only pointless posturing among politicians. The only rationalie is that we're already over-populated and don't need more means of reproduction. However, if people can be genetically-engineered for immunity and longevity, there is no doubt that they will go for it, and damn the law. We're not quite there yet. The first milestone will be when genes of humans are crossed with those of dogs and cats. At that time, babies will be born obedient and tiolet-trained.

I find edicts, directives, legislation, intrusions of ANY kind of government into the lives of freeborn citizens absolutely unacceptable.

It has been the job of science to research and discover ways to make human life more comfortable, safer, and to help them continue their genetic code into the future. Therefore, all these scientific ideas and techniques will go forward with those aims. I am a proponent of zero population growth, but this does not mean zero babies... Just as gun control is not about zero guns. What it means is "responsible reproduction", and if a couple requires In Vitro fertilization to achieve this, then it will happen. Cloning, like most reproductive discoveries, will be used extensively in the animal agricultural area... just as artificial insemination was. I remember the brouhaha over AI when it was introduced to the public, now, raising animals would be nearly impossible without it. Actually.. I think cloning will be invaluable for creating replacement body parts for those needing them. Anyone see that picture of the ear growing on the mouse? So, as Bruce said, most of politicing is posturing, and people will clamor for what they feel is their right to a more scientifically improved life. Who here wants to go back to "the good old dayz" when humans used magic amulets to ward off disease? (No offense to crystal gazing new agers....) LE

Cloneing might be the awnswer to the dilemma of many a Letterhead...how to cope with a workload that's twice what you can handle. Now, if there was two or three of you, think of the possibilities.

I agree with LE (can ya believe it?) Scientific advancement will continue on (I'm Still waiting for hair replacement pill in that tiny bald spot I've got).
Theres no way to legislate it. Some regulation may be imposed. I think it will come down to price - does'nt everything? ( Attention K-Mart shoppers, Fingers and toes on sale in Isle 6)
These replacement parts won't be cheap, (research is high-dollar) you can bet. Insurance Co's want out of paying for $30 allegra alergy tablets by making them over the counter, you really think they are going to spring for the mouse ear for $30,000 when thay can get ya a hearing aid for $300 or a prostectic instead of arms and legs?
And who takes the liability when Draculas teeth and gums are rejected by the patients mouth? Insurance Companies will run from this and they have big hitter lobbyists on Capitol hill to protect them.
There are alot of cyogenic frozen heads in the fridge waiting, maybe we can thaw them out and try it first on them.I wish I had thought of this multi-million dollar scam, no-one ever complains....
LE's point on Pop control is well taken. Heck theres, condoms, pills, patches and just plain ugly to prevent unwanted pregnacies, but many are just too irresponsible to use em.
Like LE said many advancements make our life better, not all will be put into practice. When I graduated in 1979 I was promised a Jet-Pac to get around in 20 years later, Hey NASA! I'm Still WAITING!
