I have heard that a 100mb disk in a 250mb drive is slower than it is in a 100mb drive. I would like to find out if it's true because I'm considering getting a 250 drive but would probably be using 100mb disks most of the time.
Chuck, now there's a factor I never considered. I would be using 100mb more also, but an occasional 250 would be a great option. Maybe someone whose using it now can tell us about some of those details.
The best information comes from experience! I'm just trying to get some facts thru someone else's experience!

We just upgraded here and have a CD-RW on the new system. We decided against the zip in the new machine and we really haven't missed it. Somehow I feel more comfortable knowing that no matter which machine goes down, I can still read my files on any computer with a CD. (Can you tell we've been battling the computer blues around here! three systems and only one that is truly running well!) And the CD's seem almost endless in the amount of information on them.

I have an internal 100 Zip drive in all of our computers except one which has the 250. I can't tell a difference in speed when I put a 100mb Zip disk in a 250 Zip drive vs. a 100 Zip drive.
By the way, I also have a Zip CD-RW on one of the computers and I love it. I will be putting one in every computer as time and money permits.

Another possible little "glitch" that you may encounter... If you're working with large graphics files, and put these onto a 250 zip disc, there will be some printers unable to read , open, or work with that disc. Many still have the 100 zips, and have not upgraded to the 250's.

The computer mags say that the 100 meg in a 250 drive is "considerably" slower. I cannot verify that personally. However, the 100 is ubiquitous and seems to have become the standard for file transfer in this area. I don't know anyone who has a 250. At my office, we have "zip net"--files transfered by zip drive. I'm still trying to get my network up and running.

Hi Nettie, I was considering many of the same things spoken of here. After careful consideration I ended up with an HP RW CD which has 750 meg of storage. You can rewrite the disc if you use it on the same CD Player that it was written, but I just use the write feature and toss the ones that I'm done with,as they are only around one dollar each now. I can back up all my important files and can access any of them in a flash. When I make changes I just cut another disc and date it newer. Anyone with a cd player can read the files. You can also back up your music CDs and other things too. You can design a layout of any kind,even with a movie or sound and distribute it for about a buck each I bought the external model which I can move from one computer to another. The thing is fabulous for around 350.00, and less in the internal model.

I asked a friend of mine that is doing just what you are talking about. He has a 100 on one unit and a 250 on another. Most files are on 100 disc to work with either machine. Says he can see no difference either way. The two machines are identical except for the Zip drives.

I have zip drives in both my machines, one an internal eide. Since getting the "click of death" and having a lot of irreplaceable data lost, I rarely use a zip anymore. I use a CD-RW. A plain CD writer would be fine and cheaper as the disks are very cheap and you really dont need a rewritable that often.

I have heard of the Click of death, though I have never experienced it, no do I wish to try. I have 3 computers at home and 3 at the shop, they all have zip drives on them, the ones at home are older computers that came from the shop, I have a complete backup at home that way, I transfer by zips every day, and I have my entire system of files from 1989 on zip disks. But they are all 100 MB disks. my machines do not have enough irq's for network and zips, but I can add a cd burner. I think this is what I will do in the future when needed. So Far the Zips have worked very satisfactorily!(or is that in a very satisfactory manner)Well You know what I mean. LOL Bill
