I remember Joe Rees sent me this segment of rope that he somehow converted to a true type font and I can type any letter and it repeats. I need to do this with another shape and would appreciate it if someone would instruct me through the process either on the phone or via email. I'm kinda stuck on this one. I found that if I select my shape in corel and go to export, I can select ttf. Then I went to control panel, fonts, add new font, and selected it and loaded it, it showed up on my font list. After that when I type in anything, all I get are faint dots. No shapes. Nothing I can fill. Can you teach me?

Rick, you'll need to read the help section on truetype export in coreldrw most of the info you seek is there.Once you do ya can set up a page for type design & save the cdr file as such.then you'll have to export all 26 characters upper & lower case along with any puntuation & numerals necessary to complete the font as your needs dictate,up to 256 characters. hope this helps ya!

Hiya Rick, If the font is installed, you can go to the character map application & see the actual key strokes. Go to start, Programs, Accessories, system tools, & you'll see it there. Havin' fun, Checkers

first thing that will help u is to bring up the help on this subject and then print it out, have it next to u when your ready to begin... it really helps it isnt hard to make fonts in ocrel, but if you miss a step ...or get out of sequence u will find it a tad confusing. the good news is that once you have done it it really does become second nature. like u i needed a shape instead of letters, for a script fill that only works with a font so i made every character a rectangle and as i type it just makes the pannel bigger. i have found great fonts that are missing the special characters like ! & * and so u can add them by making a new font based on the one you like.
hope this helps
regards gail

Rick contacted me by email Friday to help him with this. It had been so long, I had forgotten how I did it. On top of that I'm now using version 9 which seems to do it a little different than I remember v8 doing it. After a few tries, I recreated the process and passed along the info but I havn't heard back from Rick since. I hope the struggle didn't send him over the edge!
Anyway, I thought I might post an excerpt from our communications here in case it helps anyone. The beauty of creating a 'shape' font like this is being able to repeat an object around a panel using the 'fit text to path' command. Great for things like rope segments or chain links, or any other repeating symbol. Its a whole lot easier than duplicating dozens of shapes manually and hand-placing each one - especially if the path you need to follow is irregular. Here's the excerpt;
quote:Here's a way to do it that I found just now in Corel9. Maybe it will work for v8 too; First, the shape has to be only one closed object with not too many nodes. Create it, select it, then click on 'Tools' from the main menu bar along the top of the work page, scroll down to 'Create', select 'Symbol' from the fly-out, give it a name, and it will automatically create a symbol font of that one character that can be accessed through the symbols docker and also applied as a font to a string of text. In the test I just did I created a kidney shaped blob, filled it with black and created a 'Symbol' called 'Blob'. I was able to type in a string of characters in my default text style, and when I looked at my fonts list, there was the font called 'Blob'. By changing to the 'Blob' font, presto, the type was changed to a row of blobs with perfect spacing and kerning ability. In v8 I think you might be able to access that 'create symbol' function simply by right clicking on the shape. Its in there somewhere. Keep trying, good luck, Let me know when you get it.
So Rick, where are you? Did it work for you, or are you just getting drunk now? Hope all is well.
ps, if anyone wants a copy of a good rope font that works well for creating a rope border, just ask.

Joe, A million thank yous for your help. I'm getting there. How do you assign a key stroke to the symbol? What do I do when I heve two shapes that I want to alternate along a path. I'd like to just type ABABABABABABABABABABABABABABABABABABAB.What's next? And Joe, doing it this way, will it show as a TTF that will function with other programs? Again, Thank You.

Rick,when ya export as a ttf file a dialog box will pop-up & you can assign a font name & a file name on a new file on your hardrive.Once you have created the file,you must export each individual character & assign it a keystroke or keystroke combination for any characters over the number of standard keys on your keyboard up to 256 characters.At the same time you assign a keystroke you can edit any kerning info in the same window.Once the file is completed,you have to install it as a font in the fonts icon in control panel.You can only have one or two characters inna font & the rest of the ones not there will show up as boxes in any preview windows.
