How long did it take? That's a loaded question. Noella and I probably have about 20 hours in the design and rendering. I programmed details of the images to vector art, then we plotted the design onto 4' x 8' panels on the sabre before assembling on the frame. That saved tonnes of time...no projecting...no distortion. Next we assembled the panels on an aluminum frame (with double sided tape - 3M $180 per roll)...and transported the mural in two pieces to the civic complex.
On the friday, we put the first quill to the surface at 4p.m. and worked til 9. Saturday, we painted from 11a.m. to 11p.m., and sunday, 10a.m. til 2...when we had to start taking stuff down. In all, we have 160 collective hours just in the painting that weekend. Noella probably has an additional 16 hours, and still going.
Who's idea was this letterhead thing anyway?

That's amazing....will all the mural projects be done in a similar way or are some done directly on exterior walls?

We have opted to render the murals on aluminum panels rather than paint directly on the walls for a number of reasons:

1) no guarantees on the weather, and when you only have 4 days...well,

2) to my knowledge, this is the largest city to host a walldog event. Cornwall has a unique bilingual heritage, and essentially, two downtowns: one french and one english. We felt the distance between the locations would hinder the 'letterhead' mingling that is so often a highlight of these meets.

3) wall prep. One can only imagine the number of details involved in hosting a meet like this. Wall preparation would have been a nightmare... add to that: time and logistics, seminars, security, transportation, lighting, paint drying time, meals, etc, were all part of our decision to work in one location, indoors.

We realize that 'artistically' you can't beat painting directly onto a wall... but after working on the cheese & butter board mural, I can honestly say that working with your friends, on something that you all love, is far more rewarding.

I agree, Nancy....I opted to work on the Basque mural in Boise over working outside in the 107 degree heat!! It was comfortable and enabled all of us to take breaks to attend lectures, get something to eat and visit the booths. I'm glad it's an indoor event.
What can you tell us about Nav Canada? I did an internet search and wasn't able to find any details on it. Is it a convention center?
Thanks for the info!
Adrienne
