I've never lettered a race car before. The customer needs the number "21", 17'' high, on the doors. My question: If I were to slant the numbers forward on the driver side door(toward the back of the car), is it kosher to slant them backward on the passenger side? Or, do you not slant them at all. How do you handle this?

Don't laugh at me....Ok???????

Hi Wayne, I usually try to slant the numbers 30 degrees, towards back or front. If one side is slanted backwards, slant the other towards the back also.
Try to find a constant line on the car, (front to back) and line the numbers up with that. I mean use that line to line up the top and bottom, usually the doors are bigger on back then front, so I try to split the difference, if that makes sense. It might look goofy up close but will look good from a distance (on the track).

Good luck!

I "usually" slant the numbers towards the rear of the car. Somewhere between 25 and 35 degrees.

I also slant numbers to the back of the car....EXCEPT when it looks silly...for example a #7 slanted left looks really strange to me!

I agree Dave, 7's and 4's are a pain sometimes. Sometimes, depending on the car type, slanting forward looks good too. The late Dale Earnhardt's #3 is like that.

What the hell!

I am going to be the "Odd Ball Here!"

I would slant both numbers 15-25% to the front of the car, As it looks as if it's a forward motion...
Trying to get in the led of this race!
Putting my neck out to get to the Finish Line.

And all the other graphics will be done in the same motion pattern. or straight up and down only.

But,using the pattern in reverse will also give you a effect of going by! (Wind Swept).

I myself don't enjoy this one as it doesn't caught the Eye!
Have yet to see a really good backslash free style lettering.

Yea Stephen,

Forward slanting letters/numbers might be needed if the car's a Ford or Dodge. They seem to be reaching forward in a futile attempt to drag the lagging machine forward whereas rearward slanting letters on a Chevy are being affected by the awesome G forces and hurricane force winds as the car rockets toward the finish line.

Thanks for the help everyone!

See Wayne!
It all works in the end..
Someone has to come in FIRST!!!! and someone has to come in LAST!!!!

Ha Ha Ha....
Putting the lettering on in a straight up and down font only makes them look like they are standing Still!!!
So I like the idea of charging ahead!

ive had this problem before...as grundy says 7's dont lean to the left real good....depending on the numbers..is how i base the way they set...some look good straight up and down, others will look better with a slant only to the right of the letter. ...single digits...i make way bigger, double digits...i usually push em in a little or they will take up the whole side of the car...#88 you can do anything to it and it will still read good, #89 if slanted reads better to right only......lay out the nuber in corel and play with it...is what i usually do....but then .....i do what the customer wants.....
