I need help identifing the method used to get a chrome finish on curved mediums eg. motorcycle helmets as the film will not form well on the curves.

The Mylar type "chrome" won't make a compound curve no matter what you do. The chrome finishes you are seeing on the helmets are done by vacuum plating, the same process they use to chrome plate plastic model car parts. Where you get it done I haven't a clue. Perhaps a call to a helmet manufacturer would get you an answer.

I know this isn't what you want to hear but in " Hemmings Motor News " there are many advertizers which chrome plate plastic parts.
Hemmings is a world renown automotive monthly magazine type booklet printed out of New Hamshire, USA. Usually has a brown paper cover and can be ordered from any news stand anywhere........
Restorers and Exotic automobile dealerships usually have one handy........

If your a race fan you may remember a few years back Darrell Waltrip drove a chrome car in the Winston. I saw an interview with DW about that car, he said it was covered with vinyl! The car was cool, who ever covered it with chrome vinyl did an awesome job. I'll try to find a picture of it.
