I will be doing eight large 8'x10' glass window graphics. It will have 10" bands going horizontal on all of them along with some vinyl graphics. The problem is, there maybe old tape adhesive as well as other sticky/dirty stuff on it as well that I may need to deal with. Would anyone have some on-the-experiance solutions to make a clean and quick removal of this stuff prior to painting the graphics?

Your replys will be appreciated,

A BIG ROCK! Seriously, use Rapid Remover for any old adhesives and a razor blade and Rapid prep for the rest.

Hey Roger,
I'm on the island of Oahu, 12 miles from downtown Honolulu. Do you have your products at OneShot supplies (sign supply store) here in Honolulu? I may be needing your products by Monday (coming). If the company that's finishing up the inside construction do not remove the junk, than you know who will. I'll be in touch with you soon. Mahalo for the info.

Aloha,

just mentioned this in another post....if the window has been exposed to road oils and exhaust residue....your gona have to wash that window with a/e reducer or laqure thinner to break the stuff loose....to test and see if its clean....take a china marker, i call em grease pencils...and see if it will make a clean line on the glass....if it skips and dont leave a nice unbroken line...wash it some more....after the reducer or thinner use some fantastic or purple stuff....then wash with window cleaner..and take a lot of old newspapers...there the best stuff for cleanin winders.....

Old paint,
Thanks for the info. but I guess it may not be as bad as I thought cause the graphics will be on the 'inside'. But I will take your advice when dealing with an outside situation on glass.
Thanks,

Old Paint and Roger are both right.

You can never over clean a window and both mention using different products!

I will guarantee that after using both your vinyl will bond to the glass and the only thing that will remove it is the glass breaking!

this talk of glass breaking reminds of a funny story a few weeks ago.

i paint the windows in a sushi restaurant a couple times a year. when i go up, i clean the windows myself. one room had a bear in the river catching salmon covering three window panels. they loved this one and kept him up for a couple years. i would touch it up every time i went up there.

but, it's a window painting. i was ready for them to change it. i asked about it and the guy said the bear was gone. the window had broken.

so i get in the restaurant and the first thing i see are the bare window and the "bear" ass window. the main window had been replaced and the pane to the right still had the airbrushed big brown bear's butt.....i just burst out laughing, it looked so funny.

the guy said it had only been that way for a couple weeks

my windows are pretty easy to clean, even without rapid prep....if you at least try

Gail, cleaning glass may not be a dificult task.
But what and how you use has a big effect on which(if any) residues you leave behind.

Cleaning glass with a product not designed to be compatible with adhesives(such as silicone) can cause problems when trying to paint or apply vinyl.

We did some windows last week and used the Rapid Prep and then the stuffRoger makes for cleaning and polishing glass, whatever that's called. We then put some sticky-back on the cold glass and peeled off the app tape without lifting any letters. I like the products, and would like a sample of the latest version of the Rapid Remover to try Joey's discovery of cleaning quills with it in the ultrasonic.

Rick, don't use "Rapid Clear" prior to painting or applying vinyl !!

Only use Rapid Clear to clean and polish substrates your not going to paint or apply vinyl to, use Rapid Tac or Rapid Tac II for applying vinyl.

Rick, we will send you a sample of Remover.

You want to be careful using Lacquer thinner on a window...if the window is "loaded"(set in to tighly)and the window is hot from the sun you can "blow it out"... because of the rapid evaporation it will cool one spot and just explode...alcohol can be iffy too. This is not a figment of my imagination...it happened to me on a 6'x10'x 1/4" plate glass window. Can't hardly get away from it fast enough.(I did)

Since then I only use a wall paper scraper, mineral spirits and cake Bon Ami...no complaints!!!

"Werks fer me, it'll werk fer you"

Although I have to admit Rogers products sound like they do the job...Incidently Roger if I came to Hawaii and you demo your product that means I can write off my vacation right?

OK, Roger, so just what is the purpose and when would we use the Rapid Clear? Why would we be prepping a surface we don't intend to letter? Is this a dangerous product in the hands of a vinylwriter?

Rick, the Clear was designed to "polish surfaces" to give them depth and clarity, you see the film it leaves dries "clear".

After you apply some vinyl to your customers' WINDOWS,TRUCK DOORS, MENU BOARD, PLEXIGLASS,FORMICA, ETC.
You can clean and polish it (makes the job look great).

Also, you can use it on your t.v. screen, moniters, ridding gogles, sun glasses, safety shields helmets, mirrors, auto. glass, it leaves a slight residue(clear one)
that is somewhat anti foging, anti static, great also for plex. found in aircraft.

O.K. I'll shut up now, let me know if anyone wants samples !!

Since I have been using the Rapid-Tac line of products my hands are starting to feel and look alot better. Solvents containing petroleum had made my hands look as it I was a hundred years old.

For removing any adhesive including silicone chalking I use Rapid-Remover. I also use R/R for cleaning paint from my brushes and always keep a good amount in my ultrasonic cleaner. It works wonders on airbrushes as well.

For prepping vehicles before painting I use Rapid-Prep, never a problem and its quick.

For cleaning my eye glasses I carry Rapid-Clear in a 4 oz.spray. It also covers minimal scatches in plastics and makes both plastics and glass feel as smooth as a babies ---

I don't do hardly any vinyl but when I do, I use the Rapid-Tac II as a positioning fluid when putting vinyl names on tailgates then outline them in paint.

OK this is really the killer, my bowling scores have gone up since using Rapid-Tacs "Knock Out" ball cleaner, its made for ball control!!!!!!!

Ask Roger to send you a sample and check it out for yourself........

I hate these deals. Old vinyl can really be nefarious in removal. It is correct about using too hot a solvent and having the window crack. My worst nightmare was one that shattered when I used lacquer thinner. 9 foot wide window that cost me $800 and really slowed up me week.

Best solution is straight mineral spirits. I even cut up the lettering some and let it soak in some. Using the razor blade in a good (old) holder at an angle and turning it over each stroke to keep the blade as sharp as possible. I push up from the bottom and slice it off at the angle. The glue softens up nicely with mineral spirits.

Step two is to wash the window one more all over with mineral spirits and blade off any leftover glue of vinyl. It is the most nasty substance I ever handle...slippery and impossible to get rid of.

Three: wash down with windex or any glass cleaner. Use plenty of paper towels.

Four. Wipe down with bon ami on a damp sponge and squeegie with clear water. The bon ami really gets any last glue or oils off the glass. As far as cake ban ami??? Never saw it. I use the stuff in the can in powder form, made right here in KC. "hasn't scratched yet!"

Good luck in Hawaii. Wish I was there!
