Hello again everybody!!! Recently we posted a question for anyone's advise of a business plan, advise, etc to starting up a new sign shop (vinyl, foam letters, etc - non electrical). We received back a large response and greatly appreciate everyone's input. Most of you stated that a business plan is more trouble than worth and sometimes not necessary. Currently we do not have the funds between us to get started with equipment, supplies, building rent, phones, payroll (for 2), etc. We have thought of purchasing a little equipment at a time and just build up to the day we can start, but that would be quite sometime before we would be able to accomplish that. Next we thought of a small business loan, due to ample credit is established on a personal level. But in reading that small business loans are so hard to come by and that a business plan is necessary??? so, what other alternatives to getting started are there? Maybe some of you self-starters can share your experiences of how you got started with us for inspiration!!!! Once again ANY and ALL information would be greatly appreciated.

Can you speak with a company that has financing available? Most of them do. Without your equipment, you cannot get started, unless you know how to handletter. I started out handlettering. Bought an overhead projector.(1976) Got a shop. Painted painted painted! Saved for my computer and plotter. Have had them for over 10 years now. Now Am starting to paint some again!

like cheryl says....same here...i went full time sign painter in 86...with brushes, paint and a van.....had a $250 a week job and wasnt gona get better...as for the equipment thing...the most important is "talent" for this line of work...not just lookin at it and sayin gee it looks like easy money to make a sign...i got plenty of them around this town...people with expendable income(more money and time to play)that buy equipment and now "they is a sign maker". as for gettin the money to buy eqipment look around for some of these(i wana be a sign makers)who sprung for the equipment and then found out it aint that easy....they sell ploters and printers way less then new....but you may have to get a loan from family, credit cards, or commercila credit..

i think it would make a difference if you would say where you were from. i asked on your last post. are you american, canadian, where? then some people might guide you to useful places to get money...
If you cannot afford the goods (Shop Equipment) then the only way to get out there and prove your name is with a sharp mind,Pencil and some paper patterns and the Old fateful Brush.... Never liked business plans as they will tell you what you can and cannot buy with their money! Starting up a business is the hardest thing you will ever do! I will assure you that you will not make anything in the first 2-3 years. You will be spending more on your growth and overhead before you see a profit. But don't let it get you down! Remember is all for your betterment in your lifestyle.
GOOD LUCK!
