hi guys,

if anyone has some time for a rough estimate.

the size of the whole thing is 90.5" x 27". the black lettering is about 70" x 15". whether i use vinyl letters or paint, the yellow background and black frame would be painted.

the client wants it painted in a window. it's the most lettering i've been asked to do, so, i'm stumbling a bit on price and also i want to know the cost of vinyl because it is so much lettering.

Hmmmmm...Old Paint says he will cut vinyl for $6 a running foot X 7 feet = $42. Then:
1. Apply the vinyl.
2. Mask off the border and paint with Deka or other latex, hit it with a hair dryer.
3. peel off the inside masking and roll on the yellow.
4. 2 hours max!
5. $175 sounds good to me!

The question that I'd ask is how do you intend to paint the yellow? What are you intending to prevent a streaky appearance when backlit after dark? Do you know about adding oil and varnish to your color and stippling? How far do you need to travel to this jobsite and how many trips do you anticipate? $250 would be my starting number to consider.

boring? no kidding, eh? i will be working on it a bit. one thing is there's probably a gold's gym guy (oscar statue with a barbell) i'll put in. but, in this spot, this is probably what he wants, more or less.

we are having talks about a large mural and some other work, too. if the mural gets off the ground, that'll be sweet.

as for the paint, i use waterbased sign enamels and/or latex house paints. then i spray a clearcoat over that. i airbrush my windows, so there is no streakiness.

and the black frame will be gradiated on the inside edges for that airbrush fade.

so, i gave him a quote and we will meet tomorrow. tonight i will gussy up this idea a bit and show him some other ideas for font, layout, etc.
