Since I stopped making signs last fall (that stuff WILL kill you!) I have generally refered sign request calls to another local shop that I know will do a good job. Sometimes I just pass the work along, but sometimes these are former regular customers that need signs on an on-going basis, and therefore represent a big honking plum, client-wise. So here's the problem; seeing as I'm broke now, while I'm trying to build up a new clientele for my illustration, cartoon and graphic design work, I feel I should get something for turning my pal onto these "plum" clents--I give him layouts & logos and other vital info as well as steering the (former) client to him. What's a fair way to deal with this? We already do some trading of services, but that won't work in every situation. And it's not like I'm acting as a salesman, really, either.
So, how's about it gang, some input please?
Bill Krupinski Jefferson, Wisconsin--and I don't care WHAT Jay Leno says, there are no "E"s in WIS-CON-SIN!!! However, there's plenty of "e"s in "CHEESE!"--so say it & eat it, if you please.

If you have a good relationship with the other sign shop, ask him up front to add in 5-10% as a finders fee on all of the work this client brings to him over the next 6- 12 months. If you are suppling art or layouts or specs, he should be more than willing to kick back a little, especially if he is passing it on to the client!
