Aerosol Paint Incident Has Alabama Couple Seeing Red ---

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama - Things definitely heated up in the
kitchen for an Alabama couple after they tried to warm up a
few aerosol paint cans in their oven. John and Ruby Barnes,
from Huntsville, claimed they "we trying to make the paint
come out of the can easier." The paint came out easier all
right, followed by a ball of flames when they opened the
oven door. Ruby Barnes received second-degree burns to 20
per cent of her body. Her husband suffered first and second-
degree burns on his face, hands and arms. Both are recuper-
ating in the burn unit of the hospital at the University of
Alabama in Birmingham.

I read a while back about a guy doin the same thing. He was taking the advice of heating cans in WARM water. He put water and a can of spray paint on the stove. Do I need to go on....?

It's interesting this story surfaces now..

Just this past weekend I saw a show on PBS called "Handy Ma'am".. basically it's a do-it-yourself home improvement show for women so I figured I'd watch it for laughs.

ANyway.. in one of the segments, the host went to the Underwriter's Laboratories (UL) testing facility where they do flame tests on products.

This particular test they did involved aerosol paint cans. They roasted a 6 pack of cans

They basically subjected the cans to fire for two minutes.

Each can reacted a different way.. all went off at different times, they all went different directions, all shot flames a different way, but they all blew up except one that created more of a flamethrower effect... which was really freakin cool BTW.

When they got done with all the computer analysis on the data their sensors sent back their conclusion was:

Aerosol paint cans are very unpredictable when sujected directly to fire.

Really? Wow... never woulda guessed that.

Golly I hate those fireballs in the kitchen. It doesn't do the wallpaper much good either. I had the same problem the last time I was broiling some acetone. It cleans out my airbrush bottles much better when it's warm. Sheeesh!

some of ya might remember in sept 98(we had just moved into this house in july)i call it my labor day "cook in".
this house has a gas hot water heater in the utility room(old one with constant pilot)and i had all my krylon cans(25-35)in a box, and i got had the bad habit on not replacing the caps on the cans....well i was in the util room and moved some boxes around, musta set anothe box ontop of the spray can box(and it started to spray paint in the box and fill the room with fumes & the fumes found the pilot light)..and then shut door and went into the house...the clothes dryer is in there also...and the wife was doing a wash and went to take the clothes to the dryer..she screams FIRE!!!!! so i run out, and dummy i am i open the door, well fresh air faned the flames and it got bigger...i looked and the box with all the spray cans was in flames ..told the wife to get outa the way that the cans would blow....and she moved away iwent in house to get 5 pound extingisher...we have luckly.....iam in the house and the walls shook...when the cans blew...paint everywhere and it was all on fire....she got the water hose, and i had the 5 pounder..and we knocked it down enough and then the fire dept arrived...thank god....they secured it from burnin the whole house down...and hung around for couple hours to make sure it didnt get into the attic....all my spray cans are outside now and they all have caps on em...and if you buy a fire extingusher..get at least a 5 pounder( i coulda used 2 for sure)..any thing less is a waste of money....and no amount of money can stop a fire......unless you put it in a large extingusher...

This just in...........

Jenny and Victor were sittin here listening to me share the post with them and Jenny said, "Tell them about Myja!" (pronounced Miah.)

Myja is a friend of Jenny's who "is blonde and has blonde moments...many of them!"

Myja opened a new jar of peanut butter, and found it a little too thick for her to spread without ripping the bread apart. She decided to put it into the microwave to soften it up. She had failed to remove all the foil seal from the mouth of the jar...3-5 seconds later, * B O O M * . No one was hurt from the explosion of the microwave, however when her father got wind of the situation, thats another story! Hahaha!

I reckon she took the scenic route to the understanding, NEVER do a job halfway!
