I need to come up with a quote for a 14 ft box truck done in vinyl on both sides and the rear roll up door and some lettering on both cab doors. I am trying to post the picture of the rough draft. They provided the artwork in .eps format.

Please go here if the picture doesn't show up http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/ambosmommy?e&.intl=us&.flabel=fld1&.from=d&.pindex=7&start=1&.src=ph&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/bc/ambosmommy%3fd%26.flabel=fld1%26.intl=us%26

Also, how would I cut this when I only have a 24" plotter and very cheesy Vinyl Express Software?

Thanks!

I tried to open your site and was not able to see file....
Try again on your posting..
24" plotter will give you any size letters you need and so will a 15 " plotter ETC..
You just need to know about Tile work......

"Vinyl Express" will achieve the results of you work as well as other programs!

Like to see what you are talking about before I can say anything about time, materials or job costing!
Plotter size doesn't matter it the final application that counts.

I was able to open the link with out any problems. If the job is just one color like the example I would charge around $900. If it is in multiple colors I would charge about 8% more per color.

you can treat it like you would a wall sign or a window...price it by sq.ft. you got one side your gona letter at least 7'x 12', so 7x12=84 sq.ft. now times 2= 168 sq. ft. and rear roll up door is at least 7'x 6' so add another 42 sq.ft. now you got 168+42= 200sq.ft....now if your using callendared vinyl...$6 a sq.ft if your useing hp no less the $8 sq.ft......and you know their gona want it for less...so start with these figures...and sell it where your happy with it. look at my web page www.asignmint.atfreeweb.com the furniture gallery...it was a 12' box...got $850 for it.

Amy..Based on the sizes you posted and the images I saw...There isn't anything on the job that couldn't be cut on a 24" cutter except the oval in the lower picture and the bunch of grapes. I would break the grape image into two components and fit together on installation. The oval would have to be tiled, unless you use pinstripe tape to create it. Everything else is less than 24" high.

Surely you aren't going to try and cut the graphics in the eaxt position that they appear in the image? That would be VERY wasteful of vinyl materials.

I just saw you posting.
As Dave said all of this can be done on a 24" plotter.
Just break it down in different pieces as you don't want to waste material in order to make money!
Just because some of the copy is on a 45 degree angle doesn't mean you have to cut it that way. Only on your application!
Tiling only means that if your copy is 44"
you have to sperate a top and bottom tile to cut in the program..
Remember that you must lay the bottom down first and the top over it as the overlay seam will allow water to drip over it and not contaminate the edges
I hope some of this helps!!!!
Good Luck.

Hi Amy.
I just did a box truck last month, God, I HATE rivets! But I did as much of the copy in HP vinyl as I could, then got my Stabilo & laid out the logo on the sides & garage door, then I PAINTED them w/1-Shot. (This was a job where the client was not worried about removing the lettering down the line.) I charged $850, and I felt that maybe I shoulda charged more, but he is a repeat guy. It is such a pain in the butt to piece together big vinyl, not to mention buy it, cut it on my 4B, weed it, tape, it, etc. Painting took half the time and was almost free, considering that I already had the paint left over. And it looked so nice. There are just some things you gotta do by hand!!!
Love- JILL

Thanks for all the replies.

I gave a quote of $890. The guy hasn't gotten the truck in yet. Supposed to call when it arrives. I'll let you know what happens.

As far as the cutting, I just never had to cut anything (for example the giant circle for the roll up door) that was bigger than 24". I was not aware of the tiling but assumed there was something like that. I am going to play with it tonight probably.

As far as waste goes, I am always trying to figure the best way to utilize my vinyl without a lot of waste as I am new and don't have a ton of money to spend on stuff yet.

By the way, I am planning to become a resident next month hopefully. Was going to do so last week but had to fork out $400 when my car broke down! Thems the breaks!

Don't sweat it as we all go through these periods of "Money no Money"
You price looks good but give them a little extra above what you said in the qoute as Sweet Honey..
And make sure they know that you did this out of your way with no extra cost!
You will have a customer for life after this fact!
Put some colour into those Grapes!!!

Steve,

Thanks for the support. The customer already has a bunch of these trucks and is a potential repeat customer. He doesn't want the color in the grapes!! I was hoping he did!

He is getting something extra that he doesn't realize though. The .eps file of the logo he sent me with the ovals did not have the ovals or the words between them. I had to recreate it and since I am just learning this software it took a while.

But at least I am learning from this experience!!
