i set up in the mustang car show..here this weekend....of all the questions...and requests...this one stumped me...ok...you know the 80's-90's mustangs with the ground effects on the rocker panels...they have MUSTANG or MUSTANG GT ....impressed into them....what i keep gettin asked for are the letters to go inside these....well i got the logo..but question is...if i measure the hieght and length of the impression...and set it to the logo ..will it cut it so each letter will fit in the indentation?....somebody must did one of these....

Or better yet, use a brush and some One Shot. No masking involved. I can usually do a rear bumper insert in about 15 minutes and the side take a little longer cuase they're lower.

We have done a few Jeep Tailgates with the inset. We just traced it with tracing paper and scanned it. Can it be done the same way?

Joe..The last time I did something like that I taped some tracing paper over the area and then used a regular squeegie to squeegie over carbon paper. That gave a very accurate impression of the lettering. Then, as Robert said. Just scan and manipulate your existing logo to fit the scan.

Joe,

I have painted them but not applied vinyl in them, It seems as if it would be hard to get the vinyl into the impression perfectly.

Then I'd figure you would have to do each letter individually.

Of course if you DO make a pattern that would fit, make a bunch of em and sell them to the end user to apply, it sounds like a money maker to me.

Same here, I have hand painted em Joe, and the larger ones don't take long, but the smaller ones take a little longer. Never tried a vinyl insert. If you come up with something, let us know.
Hmmmm. What Gavin said. What if you cut the logo, reverse weeded, applied and sprayed with krylon, etc. May work, don't know.

lee.. i have painted them and other cars like a Z-24, that have them indented..but with paint you got static electricity....hold the brush an inch away from the plastic and the paint jumps on it from the brush....was sorta lookin for the easy way..cut em tape and hand em to the buyer...let him , clean, and fit the vinyl in there..imagine static will effect the vinyl also...

Joe.. I paint them and don't worry about the edges while painting... When the paint sets up,(I use HOK) I wrap a paper towel around a paint stir, soak it with some 3812 and remove the excess using the flat side of the stir.. Takes me about 30 minutes start to finish including clean-up and I charge around $60 bucks.. As long as the recessed letters have clean edges, I get a clean look. I usually have to clean up some of the edges with a lettering quill..

FWIW.. I asked a friend at a vinyl sign shop what they charge to letter a Mustang bumper and he said $25.00. I didn't ask if they install by the letter or whole word.

Hope this helps...

Last year a woman came to me with her daughter's new red Mustang for her college grad. present from college.
She wanted silver so I used:

one-shot silver
size 2 or 3 grey squirrel quill
and went to town!
it was fun and easy.. 15 min. also for me
plus sitting in the driveway to get down there.
It must be a popular item! I think now that I will let the dealers know I offer this
charged a dollar a minute. $15
and she brought it to me and picked up the paint which I gave her the rest. I only used a tiny bit, of course.

We get a lot of request for the inserts also, I have tryed a few times to get the right size lettering but if you measure each letter each leg of the letters are a differnt width. I know there are a few people out there making them, but I'll be damned if I can get it to come out right.
I hope you have better luck then i did.
