I doubt you will find any safety data on vinyl sheeting. I don't think there is a health hazard associated with it unless you burn it or heat-process it (vacu-forming). Some of the pigments do contain lead chromates, but I doubt you would get lead poisoning even if you ate a mouthful.
What you smell is not from fumes, but simply the odor of the vinyl and its adhesive.
3M has a list of MSDS documents for their hazardous products that is available through their Fax-on-Demand service. From outside the U.S. the number is 1-650-556-8417.

I have msds for vinyl from 3M, Gerber and Arlon as well as a few others. In the US, suppliers are required to make sure you have msds for ALL supplies. Im am surprised if this is not the case in Australia. You can get msds for many products from the websites of the manufacturers.

You're right that MSD Sheets are available for vinyl. The person I spoke with at 3M technical information said that material safety data was not available for vinyl sheeting "because it's not a liquid, so the government doesn't require it."
She was right that the (U.S.) government doesn't require safety data to be published on vinyl sheeting. But it is published by 3M, apparently as a courtesy in response to customer requests. Obviously, if you have the sheets, it is published by other vinyl makers as well.
Here's the link to 3M MSDS documents: [link]http://products.mmm.com/US/graphicarts/MSDS/msdsSearch.jhtml?_DARGS=%2Fus%2Fgraphicarts%2FMSDS%2FmsdsSearch.jhtml.2[/link]

With your knowledge of toxicology, any postings by you in the future would surely be helpful and interesting.
Because of our chosen profession, I'm sure that many of us here have raised by several notches our 'at risk' status for cancer, respiratory diseases and other maladies.
Are you in the paint industry, government official, consultant? Just curious.

On another front, in our state and also according to some OSHA inspectors, when you have msds on some materials, you must have them on all materials. That is the only way to officially tell what is not hazardous too. We even had to get them for white-out and magic markers (they are avaiable but you have to ask). I have one for plywood, plastic sheet, etc.

Deviating slightly from the intended subject, what I'm baffled by is how "Safety Dude" landed on this site? Welcome, but what's the connection? and how did you find us?

I don't have accurate info on vinyl films but I would assume they would contain pthalates a a plasticiser. These have recently been in the spotlight as a health risk, particularly because they have been used in childrens toys.
Also worthy of note is the fact that vinyls contain chlorine and many aspects of chlorine chemistry have serious environmental impacts. Some of the well politicized ones are the dangerous by-products like PCB's. Our use of vinyl has an impact and we should be aware of it.
Safety Dude, no doubt you can shed more light on this and other issues of concern to this industry.
One thing I'd like to point out which you may not be aware of: Actual names are prefered over nicknames in this forum. You may also supply identifying information in a signature profile.
