What do others use to prime HDU? It seems to soak up everything I use like a sponge. And how many coats should it take to get a smooth surface?

Sharla,

We use Jay Cooke's primer. You should be able to get the high build primer from your HDU supplier. We put on 1 coat, lightly sand, then another coat, then the finish color. Bear in mind that in the HDU, it's made up of millions of cells, so yes, it will absorb quite an amount! Be sure to use high build primer, it's pretty thick stuff! Good luck! Oh yea, it depends on the weight you get too, the 15# is coarser than say the 18 or 20#.

I of course use Chromatic High Build Primer, often only one coat is needed with 15 lb. and above.

I also use Jay Cooke's primer. One coat and its ready for medium tack sandblast resist. If you want an ultra smooth letter, they recommend 2 more coats of primer sanding between coats, then lettering enamel.
