I'm a new signer so pardon if this is a repeat. What do you use to seal the edges of MDO board? I have primed and then use an acylic outdoor paint but do I need to do something else to the edges? I don't want this to separate on me and make me look bad. Thanks for any help or suggestions you might have.

Cynthia. I have had good luck with acrylic latex caulking. I just squeeze a bead along the edge and smooth it with my finger, nmaking sure to put a little extra into any of the voids in the edge. I leave it overnight and then spray the background coloron the surface and the edge at the same time.

Pete Payne, from Canadian Signcrafters wrote a great article on prepping mdo boards. He recommends filling the voids with caulking, and then "painting" the edges with a mixture of Tite Bond II waterproof glue thinned with 15% water. I have been using Weld Bond glue and an old foam brush (I keep the watered-down glue in an old squeeze bottle, and squeeze it into the foam brush as I run it along the edge of the board) This is supposed to soak into the wood, and make it waterproof so that it doesn't continue to soak up water. He also recommends when you are sanding, to make sure you round the edges a little to keep the paint from separating at that sharp edge.

West System Epoxy.. This product will fix everything except broken hearts and holes in the sky... Make sure to sand,prime and paint...sun's rays are harmful to this epoxy.

Cynthia, another postitive way is to use the 1/2" edge cap supplied for Lustre Board. Fill the channel with silicone and snap it on. Presto!. Looks good too.

I have used exterior wood filler for years with great results. I apply it with my fingers and then later a little light sanding to smooth it out. I do this before putting the primer on. I do alot of shaped signs, so this works best for me.

Route the edges with an 1/8" round over bit (very fast)fill with wood putty, allow to dry, sand, prime and paint away with whatever you are using on the face. The rounded edge allows the water to run off as well as not chipping in transport. looks nice too...

Cynthia, just an afterthought.......why are you even using MDO? We switched to Dibond three years ago and our customers have NEVER looked back. Infinitely superior, and by the time you prime, paint & seal MDO, you've already passed the cost of the Dibond to your customer. General contractors, architects, job site, commercial finished signage.....all Dibond for us. Blows away Alumalite. No maintenance, strippable, paintable, drillable, shapeable, maintenence free. What more could a poor boy ask for???? :^)
