Do you dream? Some do and some don't and some don't remember them. All these things are true with me at different times. I just wondered if anyone was interested in this post. When I was a child, I dreamed and traveled and of course, had nightmares, too, especially after watching Sea Hunt with Lloyd Bridges. I thought there were sea snakes in my bed, or a seahorse under my pillow! As a teenager, I travelled to far places of the earth and went to parties! I slept about 14 hours if I could, and my mother said I needed to get a real life. I dream in color and thought everyone did and sometimes for a year or two I don't dream at all. At times, I hear music, smell scents, taste food, and now... just lately, I can remember touching textures. I wonder if it is related to food, rem's (amount of rapid eye movement), or what. I have been touching base on the study of dreams but not really ambitious enough to do all that studying. Do any of you dream in color? Can you go back to a dream once you have woken up? Do you even dream? Is it in black and white? Can you taste flavors, feel touch?

I might dream in color. I'll remember a dream and know that it included a "red" bike, for example. I'm just not sure that my mind is actually seeing these colors or it's just mentally noting the name of the color. Sort of like when someone is describing a particular color to you and you get a quick mental impression of it.
I think most of us dream every night, but only remember the dreams that occur during certain sleep phases. If I awaken during the night from a dream, I can often go back and resume the same dream. I sometimes will be able to recall several dreams during the same night. I think dreams help us to resolve everyday problems or feelings of stress. I've had a problem in the past when my dreams were so real that I had trouble differentiating things I'd dreamed from reality. For example, last year I went around telling all my relatives and friends that my son had signed up for another 4 years in the Navy. He called me on the phone wanting to know what the h*ll I was telling everyone that for, NO WAY was he going to sign up again. It was one of those particularly real feeling dreams! Of course now I can consider it fortune telling, last month he re-enlisted!lol

Hi Deb Yep you betcha I dream. In color! vivid!.....dang some of those dreams are goood! When I first got my computer for the internet...I dreamed I was typing on the keyboard a LOT. (most likely from spending way too much time on the computer!) Lately I have been dreaming of signs. I have had some of the most amazing dreams. I used to keep a paper and pen close by so I could write my dreams down to tell others. I think dreams are just what is foremost in our mind at the time. Nothing less. Nothing more.

I recall several dreams in vivid colour. Especially of cars. One especially vivid dream was of a flying red Volkswagen Beetle with a number of people merrily bungee jumping from it. Nope, that one wasn't influenced by the herb. I don't indulge anymore since I became a dad. But if anyone could ever enlighten me as to the meaning of that one I would be forever grateful. I used to have awesome flying dreams where I would feel tree tops brushing against my body as I flew or floated over them. Haven't had any dreams that I recall in the last few years though. Probably too much stress!

Deb, I dream in color, taste, touch and smells. I agree with Kelli that my dreams will tell me something before it happens. It has happened too many times not to believe it. Most people who do not have these dreams will not believe you. But they do look at you funny when something you said comes true.

Debbie's post reminded me of some experiences my husband Rick had as a little boy, and which were corroborated by his family members. When he was between 4 and 5 years old, he slept on a cot in a screened porch at the back of the house. Over the course of nearly 2 years, right up until the time when he was 6 years old and run over by a car backing up in their driveway, he was occasionally "visited" in the middle of the night by a man wearing a trench style coat and 40's style hat. The man would be standing outside the screened area and tell him things that would happen. The things always involved family members and people he knew. His family thought he was making things up, and that it was coincidental when the "predictions" came true. But when the "man" told him his sister's friend was going to go to Hawaii and meet the man she would marry and it happened several months later, the family started freaking out. They even approached a priest to have him exorcised. As I said, the visitations stopped after the car accident. Looking back at that time, Rick says they had the feel of dreams, but at the age of 5, he thought someone really was standing outside the porch talking to him. Too bad the man didn't give him some really useful information, like the winner of the World Series, hee hee.

My absolutely favorite one is when I fly, soar, float, hover. This is one that I can definately return to after a slight awakening. There are three others that always baffle me; the one where my mother accidently drives us over a cliff (usually over the water), and an another where I'm at the beach and a tidel wave (a huge one) is approaching and finally the one where a tornado is coming.
Yes, I dream in color; when I was a kid, there was always a green monster after me! haha.

Hey Deb! Yes, we all dream, but often we don't remember any of it upon awakening. I dreamt alot as a child, too-- I think I was into my teens before I figured out that I wasn't actually flying when I was awake!! Though it hasn't happened for a few years now, as an adult I was able to control my dream flying, being able to hover as well as zoom over buildings and dive down towards the earth before pulling up just short of becoming road kill. Aboriginies in Australia call our waking state the dream world and believe the dream state is the true, real plane of existence that we return to nightly. Indian people in the Americas (turtle island) use dreams for guidance in spiritual matters and enter that world through fasting and once in a while by the use of "dream medicine", although this is a serious matter and not some sort of lark as Marty implies. I feel there's no need to try and anylize the process of dreaming, rather I try to open myself up to that "alternate" world and learn the teachings and lessons that come to us thru it. And yes, color, black & white, smell, taste, passion are a part of it, as they are in our "awake" world. This is a vast, untapped part of our psyche that many of never explore, but really we should--dreaming opens our minds to other realms and possibilies and can heal our hearts, minds, and bodies if interpreted properly ( a good medicine man or woman is the best guide in these matters). Hi Deb! Yup, I dream, a lot, always in color. I remember my grandma, Blossom Audelle Knipple, AKA "Mam", always dreamed in black & white, like a TV set or something. Once, she dreamed of a shiny red purse. I think that has sexual connotations. I know that sometimes guys have wet dreams. I have hot dreams (rarely) to the point of having the big "O". Probably TMI, huh. I often dream of bad things that happened to me, whether it's a Diner full of grouchy customers & I'm the only waitress. Or a crabby sign customer that I just can't please. Or one of my ex-husbands chasing me like Jack Nicholson in "The Shining". Often I dream of giving birth. I think dreams are your way of processing things that happen during the day. I think a few lucky folks have dreams of loved ones who have passed on. I did once. They say that everybody dreams every night, but some people sleep so deeply that they can't recall their dreams upon awakening. Thanks for giving me something different to think about today! Love...JILL PS Cool story, Kelli!

I don't mean to change the topic, but this is just too good an opportunity to talk about a sleep disorder called sleep apnea.
Sleep apnea is a disease in which the airway becomes blocked and breathing stops during sleep. Often the block is caused by a relaxation of tissues at the back of the throat, obstructing the airflow into the lungs. There are mechanisms present in the brain to restart breathing when blood oxygen drops too low; the person awakens in order to resume breathing. This repeated stop and start in breathing leads to severely disturbed deep sleep which everyone needs. Sleep apnea syndrome is defined as the presence of more than 30 apneas in a 7-hour sleep. In severe cases, periods of not breathing may last for 60 to 90 seconds and may recur up to 500 times a night.
I have sleep apnea. It was undiagnosed for 15 years and could well be a major factor in my current heart problems. A person with severe sleep apnea seldom dreams because they never reach the deep dream state known as rem.
If you or someone you love snores at night and appears to stop breathing, please get tested. Another symptom is always being sleepy during the day. I once feel asleep passing a truck!

I love lunch time OT posts... I get to know you all just a little bit better this way. (And some of you a little too much! Ya know Jillbeans... you could get a new nickname outta that post. )
When I meet ya all at sign meets I can ask ya all things like "Been to any parties on Mars lately?" I think those questions are a little less stuffy than "What do you use to primer this?" as an opening line. But then I am a more personal person than a work related person.
Do I dream? Yes. In color? Yes. Can I go back to a dream? Yes. Can I taste & feel things? Yes. ...or so I believe.
After a near death car accident at the age of 17 I had a re-occuring nightmare/dream that the drunk driver that hit me was in front of our house trying to "get me"... some kid shot a Beebee through one of our front windows and I was SURE it was the drunk driver. My parents thought I was nuts. My Dad was sueing this drunk driver for hitting me and I just KNEW that the drunk driver was mad as a hornet with his rear on fire and it was ALL MY FAULT. It wasn't really my fault. He hit me doing 70mph through an intersection that I had the right-of-way in, but being the "perfect co-dependent" I was raised to be- I took the blame and carried that fear with me until my divorce... when I took control of my life and got rid of ALL the drunks in my life!
I agree with Donna, dreams reflect life.
I agree with Si that dreams and our inner ability "show us" things... that drunk driver probably was madder than a hornet and did "want" to get me. Having my gaurd up was probably a good thing.

Hiya Deb, I have often spoken about this subject to other people. I once saw a program on TV about how we supposedly dream in black & white. Now the only response from people when I ask about this is that they don't really know, because they remember images only. All I can say is I see definite color schemes and sometimes I wish I had gotten outa bed and written them down while I remember. Every 6 months or so i have a ver vivid dream where I witness an aeroplane, sometimes really weird machines coming down and crashing. It is so close I can see the passengers frightened faces at the windows. I always hope that they are not premonitions and try not to think about it all day.

It's when you're asleep, and you're dreaming and it's usually something that's terrifying, but the weird thing about it is that you're trying to wake up and you can't, it's hard to explain, it seems that you know you're asleep and you try to come out of it but you can't. The "Old Hag" maybe a Newfoundland Term only, I'm not really sure. I had it happen to me a couple of times and I tell you it's really something... And No Deb I was'nt smok'n Nothing. Neil

I just knew Letterville would be the place for "DREAMS"! I have been wanting to post this topic for a long time, and wondered if there was a right time... I think we all dream.. maybe we don't remember them and maybe some of us dream when we are awake too. Si makes an excellent point about the way society views dreams and our talk about our dreams. Thank you for bringing out that point. Just because I have had an active dream life, didn't mean that the topic would be well received. However, of all places and times, I was just moved to bring this onboard and now. I have goosebumps right now! This is really exciting for me! To hear your stories, and even to dream together as Kelly and her husband, to hear from all of you and learn so much about you. I have been involved with some research on sleep for the past three years, and ways to enhance it. I want to dream more and more, and feel wonderful when I wake up. Maybe through this post we can see what causes someone to dream and what causes the lack of dreams. Or could be about the stories of the dreams, the meaning of dreams, whatever! Steve, for someone that doesn't dream when they are sleeping (and good enough to share your condition,) I am really also thrilled when we got to see you and Barb "live" your dream in California and throughout the U.S. visiting and encouraging us. Thanks for helping us to understand that sleep conditions do occur and are important for this post too! I know in my heart that our minds are also working 24/7.

I dont know if I dream in color, cant remember. I should though, dealing with colors every day.
I think when people remember dreams, thats the times there is a message in them, like a warning or direction to take. Maybe those dreams are the ones that we are supposed to remember good or bad. I do remember having really good dreams that I wanted so much to remember, but couldnt once awake. It's weird that I could remember (durring the dream) wanting to remember the dream, but not the dream itself. I guess the subconsous really does run our lives. Maybe thats why some culturs feel the way they do about using "dream medicins" to try to unite the consious and subconsious as one.
I remember having a dream (well nightmare really) not too long ago, that was so scarry that I wanted to wake up, tried to force myself to wake up telling myself this is just a dream, I thought I woke up in my safe home, but then realized I was still dreaming and the nightmare was trying to come back. I woke up in the morning remembering all this but not the actual nightmare that started it. That's the first time that has happened to me, That I could remember, it was a weird feeling.
Once I dreamed that I was Hugh Hefner, I wish I could remember that one

The only dreams I have or remember are around hearths, fires. I see ancestors and get to witness what I call ancient knowledge. Mostly it's healing realizations that are mostly common sense that I don't have the time during my awake time to ponder.
I do know that anyone can go to these wonderful places of understanding...it just takes some "paying attention" to one's environment.
environment in this case: spirit, mind and body.

Did you know that sleep is one of the body's most important functions in detoxifying? The deeper one sleeps, the more REM's per minute (rapid eye movement), the better chance the body has to detox. Water assists the body in its detoxifying, so I wonder what the physiological (physical ways) this has to do with dreams also. But, I also had the most vivid dreams in four different circumstances: after eating bananas after three days of vigorous sign painting after taking the herb cat's claw for energy after a very interesting experience or thought I wonder if the artists on this site derive their creativity from their dreams whether they know it or not! Or have dreams or nightmares after, say, for instance, striping.. do you dream in designs? Are the patterns of signs and color combinations interracting with your dreams? I really think it is fascinating to hear from your perspectives.

Hey Rick, that experience you're talking about is "The Old Hag", I was asking this Old guy about it, it happens in Older people apparantly, but I was only around 35 at the time... also they say if you have something to eat, something heavy like a Pizza with extra extra on it, thats suppose to add to the chances of having the "Old Hag" Pretty scary is'nt it. I remember a long time ago around 1980 I had a very vivid dream. I had this Custom Van, it was dressed to the nine, full wrap around mural, zoomie exaust, wheels, captains chairs.. I tell you I was really proud of that van, Hell I even won numerous awards at car shows. Now the van was'nt the dream, I really had the van, But any way I had the dream, the dream was about an accident I had, I remember telling my wife that Nobody was hurt, It was a hit and run, and that the rear quarter panel on the drivers side was damaged.., It was very "Real" The very next night we were at a friends house socializing and when it came time to go we were just putting our coats on and there was this awful bang, I looked out the window and you guessed it, my van was creamed, from behind, on the rear quarter panel, drivers side. by a drunk driver who started to run away, but I caught him. I'll always remember this cause I made such a deal about the dream I had the night before, about how real it was. My wife often talks about this because it was really weird. I did get hurt though, When I was running after the guy, I fell down a hole in a feild and really tore up my ankle. Sweet Dreams... Neil

I was in Bradenton, Florida in 1981, just taking a vacation from work, the first year I ever signpainted, (when they were about 7and 9), and were all sitting around the living room with several friends watching the boob tube after the beach. One of the friends dozed off but we didn't pay much attention until he jumped up and remarked that he just had a nightmare. He dreamed he was in a pool and my son was drowning and he couldn't reach him. Every time he reached his hand out to him he went under again. Of course, we were all surprised, but, maybe it was pertaining to the thoughts he had of protecting the kids on the beach... anyway, it is neat that you wrote from Bradenton, and jogged my memory.. We did live in Fla at the time and my kids still laugh and remember one time when I jumped in a swimming pool with all my clothes on when my son jumped in to swim! He was only one year old at the time. (he'd only had one water baby course at the time.) They still think I am a hero! and that I got my nice outfit all wet!

I have heard of the Night Hag - I saw a documentary on tv about it a couple of years ago. You are quite correct when you say it is a Canadian name - it comes from the Indian name for it. It exists in most cultures but has a different person on your chest. In some countries its a troll, in some countries its a monkey. We have different ones in Ireland - such as the Pooka - a dog like creature that signals death. I don't think he sits on your chest though. Personally I dream very vividly in colour I paint and draw in dreams also I compose music while asleep. I am really bad at writing it down afterwards. I also have similar dreams to Jill's ( but only if "its been a while..."
