Customer dropped off a glass globe that goes on top of a old gas pump. The globe has a milk finish, and the customer wants it painted yellow, with the "MOON" eyes logo painted in the center. The globe will be lighted and displayed indoors. My concern is that, after time, with the heat from the light bulb that the paint will chip, crack, or someother unknown disaster.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

You are painting it on the outside correct? It'll be fine. I had a customer drop off 2 rounded glass pieces for a gas pump light as well, they are clear and he brought in "De Soto Plymouth" dacal that he wants on it. The decal is old, wrinkled and just for a pattern. I'm going to spray-lat it, cut it, spray it, collect the cash, toast it with an Ice Cold Grain Belt. BAM. I've spray-latted a Standard Globe and cut it then sprayed the color it, then peeled the rest away. that was 1987 and it still looks good today. I used grip Flex.

Being an illuminated piece, I wouldn't use an opaque paint like One-shot.

I'd prefer to mix some paint using a translucent yellow pigment, not the chromes.

I'd also paint it inside the glass, it looks better. I don't think it'd get too hot for paint to handle. Don't make it a quick drying, brittle paint. Go for a slow flexible mix.

I'm not sure what resins/oils tend to be used in heat-resistant enamels but I'd check it out and consider adding this to the mix.

Steve,...Be sure to clean the glass very good bon ami will work well.As for the heat
from the bulb it should bake the enamel so it should be a better than normal application,as long as it doesn't get too hot which I doubt from an old antique gas pump bulb.I've got a coupla windows lettered on the outside of the glass near here I did in 1978 & they still look good from the street, although I imagine there are a few minor scratches from washing the window. The one shot should hold up great if the customer takes appropriate care washing the globe.
Oh yea, you can stipple the oneshot so as to get an even illumination from the bulb if ya use stencil mask to apply the paint.
