I've been asked by a developer to "come up with some ideas" as far as materials, mounting/installing, on 35 lot signs.
They also want a sandblasted entrance sign. The entrance, which I haven't seen yet,has already been designed by a landscape architect. The tentative design has already been done and I have been assured that it was "done by them" and not another sign artist.
My feeling is that they don't want to go to the expense of having all 35 lot signs done in HDU or redwood.
The sign shape is eliptical There is a detailed graphic of a crab in the center , the main copy is in a casual script and arched over the crab...well I'll try to post a pic later. I'm thinking that the whole thing should be digitally printed and placed on some type of substrate. But, if all of them were made of HDU, I could make the background look like the crab is on sand.
What would you use for the substrate (if they dont want sandblasted) and how would you hang them. They don't want them simply mounted on a post.
Thanks for the help

Wayne, since you are talking about crabs and sand, I'm assuming this developement has a "seaside" theme. I did a bunch of signs for a similar project a few years back. I wrapped a piece of 1" rope around oval shaped MDO signs (would use Trovicel today) as a frame. For the posts, I used two or three peeler cores for each sign. I wrapped the peeler cores with rope and hammered over the tops so they resembled small pilings.
I don't know about the availability of peeler cores in your area, but they are the round centers left over from cutting plywood veneer. I would guess you can find them in lumberyards in your area.

Thanks Jerry, The development is on the Gulf of Mexico. How did you attach the rope? Glue? Isn't Trovicel expanded PVC? Would you use hemp rope?

One thought is to do an Edge print that utilizes a sandblasted redwood look for the background. The text could easily be dropped on top to create a custom look without the expense. We did this recently with a developer and applied the prints to 3/4" MDO.
I used just plain old 1" manila rope and nailed it into the edge of the sign face with finishing nails. I clearcoated the whole thing including the rope.
You are correct that Trovicel is PVC, but it takes fasteners quite well. Your local sign supplier should be able to furnish it in 1/2" thickness. If I were making the sign today, I would probably attach the rope with deck screws and coat the entire project with Pelucid.

Thanks Jerry, Those are some cool ideas. I'll ask them what they think about the rope and Trovicel too.
So far, no money has changed hands but I sure want this job.
BTW, the entrance sign is to be 10'x 7' sandblasted. I'm kind of apprehensive about taking on one that large, working by myself, but it won't be impossible.
Thanks everyone for the help.
