I finally got my blaster running... Like I've mentioned before, the cabinet is homemade from a tip tools kit which I have made sure has a good seal, a 6.25 shop vac with some of that A/C blue/white filter. Having no experience whatsoever (& before I got ahold of you guys) I got some crushed glass from Grainger.

Now my Q: what kind of protection do I seriously need? I mean, I always see in magazines people blasting with cabinets only with a little dust mask,(Jerry... not Mathel, the other Jerry)& in cases with nothing at all. But then again I always hear y'all talking about silicosis & whatnot & it scares the crap outta me...

Thanks always all...have a good one.

Felix..If you are worried about it..Don't do it! It is as simple as that!

Sorry Felix..I should explain that I "blasted" for only about 25 years. I did it outdoors and only about once a week. I wore a blasting hood, and full body covering. I HATED doing it!

NOW ...I do it if I want to. (AND it has to be fun!)

So..If yer worried about it. I say again..don't do it!

If you feel the need to do it for business reasons, do it, but take precautions!

Enough of my ramblings!

Felix, go to a large paint store that deals with commercial painting contractors and check out the selection of filter masks that they carry. The little cheap ones are OK for something like running the belt sander but they also have a lot of better ones that will filter out any residue from the sandblast media.

well the filter blue white AC type will not stop much dust if you can see light thru it it won't stop it it works good in the furance but the speed the blaster is working and the volume of air willblow it all over.
check out www.industrialsaftey.com they have a complete line of resperators. they all have listing as to what type of dusta and vapors they will stop. You would be better of getting a rubber mask type with the replaceable cartridges. if you take it off a lot the paper type are called one shots for a reason use once and throw away. if you take them off and putthem back on they dust and stuff will get inside. Dave is right if you do free air blasting you need a hood air supply or resperator mask gloves and a full long sleeve coverall with the sleeves and legs taped. also Tape the zipper or button front. I can say with out a doubt that the sand will find its way to bare skin if it can. But it is a cheaper skin abrasion than at the plastic surgeons office. If you are not useing sand as a blasting medimum the silicous factor will go down. Test the cabinet out with some scrap wood and do a little bit and check out if you have any leaks.
